I sometimes wonder if a guarantee of a disarmed peninsula (over time, with checks in place), financial aid and a written promise to not topple their leadership in exchange for North Korea starting a path to democracy will ever work. Even limited democracy. The key sticking point is that NK's leaders know that currently their choices are to hold power or be torn apart by a mob. Maybe guarantees of post-power security could somehow fix that...

Very good point. The first step is what Trump is doing now. We'll see. Talks could crumble, who knows.

So the Trump message is that if you actually develop nuclear weapons we'll give you a deal to get rid of them but if you forswear doing so you get the high hard one, like Iran.

Perverse incentives will yield perverse results in the future.

Maybe sending a older racist Forrest Gump is just what these talks need? Seems exceptionally doubtful, but Nixon did go to China etc etc.

I think if we offered a nice estate in the United Kingdom to the NK leadership and a monthly stipend in exchange for them getting on a flight out of there we might have something.

Shit, why go that far? Can't Abe offer up some sweet deal and show them what pretty decent trade can do for a country after they get the shit bombed out of them and play nice on the public stage?

I guess they could go the Vietnam path, couldn't they - slowly capitalize their economy but keep the autocrats up top? It hasn't exactly turned Vietnam into the marvels that are Japan and South Korea but it's better than today.

No... his title and name is "Chairman Kim". It's entirely understandable for you to not know that; less so for the Secretary of State of the United States who is on a diplomatic mission to meet said Chairman Kim.

It speaks to a general level of ignorance - like, has the guy never had a State briefing on protocol, or even just read an article about the man - that is entirely expected from this bottom-of-the-barrel administration.

Problem is NK has always wanted respect. That respect arrived when they went nuclear. Highly unlikely they’ll drop the one thing that gives them the respect they want.

I wish the President luck with this task, however I’m prepared for some shitty deal designed to stroke the Presidents ego.

Can anyone name one thing the US got from Donnie-Kim I??

We do know Kim got world recognition and the US stopped military exercises off the Korean peninsula

I hate Trump, but, he is buddy buddy with the dictator archetype. He might make some progress here. I hope he does. Any success he has at convincing NK to disarm is good for humanity and the world.

Temporary delay/stopping of testing missiles. Now, it might just be because they ran out of missiles, or, maybe they are building up stockpiles, but, the fact that they haven't fired any off in recent times could be considered good news.
