Trump and China call cease fire on tariffs

I think in net it would be a benefit to the world which would help the US. It should help grow global demand for many things which would drive up not only the US auto industry, but other industries.

Maybe if US automakers had not been disadvantaged with metals tariffs which make their products less competitive in the export markets.

Long term I think more production will shift to China and SE Asia, like BMW is probably going to do with highly profitable CUVs, in order not to be subject to US political whim. US production will end up being for only domestic consumption. Foreign investment in the US is a greater risk now than any time I can remember in my lifetime and the metrics are cratering as you'd expect.

Those tariffs do not help, but, the US was never going to sell many cars in China anyway.

US indexes in retreat today. It's taking less time these days for the markets to figure out Trump's "agreements" really aren't agreements. Especially when the Chinese are saying something entirely different.

every economist who isn't named Peter Navarro right now:

According to this article China is shouldering the vast majority of the financial burden from the tarrifs. Trump was right again, we're making money and forcing a better trade deal for America.

Heh. "We" are taking money out of consumers' pockets and giving it to the govt to partially offset tax cuts for the Rich. "We" also don't seem to realize that competing with China keeps other suppliers honest, too. Funny how that works.

I guess according to Cheeto....the tariffs kill both deficits at the same time (trade and budget). Awesome!!! /s

And yes, the market is seeing right through Cheeto's bullshit. Dow down 600 today (after being up nearly 300 yesterday on the trade talk lie....er...announcement.)

lol, here is apparently an internal note at JP Morgan Chase to traders on how they should take the news:

It doesn’t seem like anything was actually agreed to at the dinner and White House officials are contorting themselves into pretzels to reconcile Trump’s tweets (which seem if not completely fabricated then grossly exaggerated) with reality.

ie: Trump is yet again just blindly and furiously lying to try and make himself look good. It's a sad day when you can't believe a single word the White House says about...well...anything. That's reason enough to remove him from office in 2020.

What's maybe most irritating about this whole thing is Trump's apparent continuing belief that other countries pay the tariffs.

They. fucking. don't. Americans pay the tariffs. That's how tariffs work.

Doesn't matter. His core base will pay the increased prices (tariffs) and believe every word that the man shits out.

I suppose there's some kind of Justice in Trump country taking the hit for Trump policy but I really don't like it at all. It's not Us against Them. As Americans, we all need each other.

Fucking Trump. Where the Hell else did he think the Chinese would retaliate other than in Ag products?

Kee-rist. If his "I could shoot somebody" premise holds true here then we're doomed.

Good note on steel tariffs too.

In an ideal production system, production occurs close to the customer and suppliers so inventory and transportation costs are minimized.

That's why any appreciable increase in foreign car purchases in China will likely result in the manufacturer setting up plants and supply chains in that market. It's the reason we have Toyota, BMW, etc plants in the US.

Ie.. it's not going to restart the GM plants that were scheduled to be shuttered. Only local consumption will do that.

Neat history fact, Lean manufacturing techniques were revolutionized and championed by Toyota with the Toyota Production System. It's the standard in auto manufacturing and it's logic has spread to many, many other industries since it was developed by the Japanese.

At the signing ceremony for the new NAFTA deal, Trump apparently singed one copy in the wrong place. Everyone around him recognized the error, and Trudeau has an especially pained expression on his face. Trump, realizing that he's screwed it up, asks nonchalantly,"which is the one that matters". Trudeau says, "Each of us get a copy".

If you haven't cringed enough today, take a look at the clip: The man is smokin' hot..he's on a roll

Jesus Christ... That is one of the funniest (and saddest for our nation) clips I've seen.

Guess that means the fucked up one is our copy now. Let Trump put it out proudly on display.
