Trump administration plans to allow drilling off all U.S. waters

Yeah Zinke seems to have gotten himself in quite the hole here.

Not really.

I think Taj is correct here. Zinke just projected himself as a kingmaker in the Senate race and demonstrated the power of his office. If Trump continues to falter, Zinke is vulture #1 circling to primary Trump. Every move Zinke makes is toward a 2020 run at the White House. Every other cabinet secretary puts Trump's name on all their actions but not Zinke; he'd building his own brand at the expense of Trump.

Nelson had an awareness problem going into re-election. Apparently the most common answer, by far, when people were asked about him running again was "Who?" even though he is the incumbent and has served since 2001. This raised his profile and handed him an issue that Scott has a past on.

I think that before we start throwing "kingmaker" around we should see if that person actually ends up wearing the crown first.

We'll go to war over resources. We'll lie, cheat, and steal for sources of energy. And since the government has repeatedly stalled efforts to transfer over to alternative energy sources, thats the way its gonna be.

This is the best reason not to drill in America. In the end the easy to get minerals are going to get depleted, and the whole world is going to be go to war over those resources. This is probably inevitable, it is only really a question of how long. If we use ours up now we are going to end up fighting over them half way around the world. And the winner of those wars is probably going to be whoever has enough of them already to wage that war. War is very resource intensive.
But, If we buy everyone else's we will still have them when those wars start and have a big advantage.

They are closed off for very good reasons. Can you name the good reasons why we should allow more oil drilling off our coasts? Are we hurting for oil right now? What positive affect will it have on the economy? Who benefits from such actions? If you can't answer those simple questions then it would be you who is arbitrarily supporting something without good reason.

Well I can tell you one thing, oil exploration does create a ton of very well paying jobs.

By this "logic", the wars will be over here when we still have all the minerals and the other countries do not.

Bad idea but if it’s any consolation oil prices are nowhere near a level where offshore makes sense.

I don't know, there are plenty of deep and ultra-deepwater rigs currently operating in the Gulf of Mexico. Overall rig count is down significantly but that is a combination of most of the shallow oil being drilled already and rigs drilling for NG not being able to compete with onshore fracking. The deep and especially the ultra-deep wells are obviously much more expensive than the shallow water wells so they still think that they can make money off of it. Granted the infrastructure is already in place in the Gulf of Mexico, not sure about the east coast.

Umm, why exactly do you think we fight wars and dedicate a huge portion of our military assets in the middle east right now and have for the past few decades? It ain't for the sand.

I have been saying this for years (if not decades). Hell ya, use other people's one time resources FIRST.

To enrich military contractors? China is investing no military resources and getting all the energy they need.

Well, they told me Iraq was invaded because we were defending ourselves from WMDs!
Then when that was shown to be horseshit--other than the ultra-long range lawnmower engine drone that was trotted out--it was to save the Iraqi people from Saddam!

So confusing!

I remember those mornings in Southern California after strong storms out at sea, off the coast.
Walking along the beach in San Diego, observing pools of oil all along the beach.
Walking, trying to avoid because dare you accidentally step on one of those oil puddles some the size of a dime, that oil stuck to your foot like super glue.
THAT is one reason why off shore drilling was banned by "intelligent" past administrations.
If any storm out at sea can stir up and bring onto shore those oil droppings, you sure do not want outright drilling off that shore.
But now.... this is what we will have.
And to allow that is totally INSANE!!!!!
Totally! Insane!

You did know that oil seepage off the coast of southern California is natural and has been going on for thousands of years?

ever heard of the tar pits? those are natural. not man made, oh the horrors😱
