1) She's female

2) I'm pretty sure my fiancee's mom DID drop out of high school.

Ah... the average consumer. People expect so much from them and then reality comes a truckin through.

I didn't know you were related to Linux, skoorb.
You should have figured it out last night when I was giving you a rear-ending!

My fiancée's mom and her boyfriend wanted a computer, however, they're rather poor. So, they saw what they thought was a great deal on a computer... it was new, and it was $200. That's all they cared about, not performance, or features or looks. They figured it would work fine, since it's brand new, and it's damn cheap.

So they bought it.

Upon unpacking it, they tried to use it. Their reaction was basically "Lindows? WTF? I need to use word and AOL..."
So, they contemplated putting windows on the machine instead of linux, but they ran into another problem. Neither of them had the slightest idea how to go about replacing the operating system.

So, the machine sat there, with no one using it, for a few days, after which it was returned to walmart for a refund.

And that's my tale of the "typical end-user" and their linux experience.

Aol is crap, get a real ISP and install openoffice for word processing among other things

There's a reason you work on computers, and are holed up in a server room all day. You're.. well, let's say.. special. People arent like you. Not everybody knows to install OpenOffice and use another ISP. People use what they are told to use, evidently, they use Word and AOL.

If more and more consumers get Lindows or Linux systems, you will surely see AOL for Linux.

Mama always said I was special....;)
Give it 10 years or so, Linux already owns microsoft in server market share and they are steadily growing in the retail side.

Yet another story of how consumers won't give something different a chance.

A coworker of mine has a story about going to buy a Toyota Camry a while back, liking every part of the car, until it said "door ajar" and she didn't like the voice being female so she didn't get the car.

Hmm . . . i'd imagine even the "average consumer" would look at the features and spec's of a computer before dishing out the $. <even if it's only $200 . . . or rather- ESPECIALLY because it's only $200>

You must have missed it a few years back when the original iMacs were selling like hotcakes. They sold because of how they looked, not because of their features or specs. They were pretty and blue and round, and a lot of people liked that enough to buy one.
I heard that some suckers actually pay money to put neon colored lights and "windows" in their computers!

Dude, don't you know? That's what makes you a power user!

actually it is. you see, the window lets you check on the heatsinks to see how much dust has accumulated, and the leds/cathodes provide the inspection lighting lol:)

its semi true. i once had a dust buildup that raised my temps up 10c:p no window then. i had not a clue the thin little fins were blocked.

So, you're girlfriend's parents are idiots ... who the hell spends $200 without having half a clue what they're getting for their money. I'm reasonably well off, and I sure don't. Then again, maybe there is some causality here
