I hear a lot of people say that OC'ing reduces the life of your video card. Is this true? or not really founded? I currently have a 40 MHz, OC on my core, and a 30 MHz OC on my memory(hey, ddrII runs hot 😛), with this OC, and my MAX temp of 51'c. Would I reduce the life of the card? Or does this only apply to those people who like to really push their hardware?
 
so what you're saying is that a 40/30 MHz oc does as much damage to the lifespan as a 100/100 oc?

Where did he say that?
The quality of every gpu is different, and the speed it can be safely run at is different. A super high quality piece of silicon might run at a higher rate than a lower quality piece with less damage.
 
Use a percentage based calculation; usually 10% is safe for overclocking and overvolting.

If you go above that then the results vary based on the quality of the component - it could fry instantly or it could continue to give you many years of use.
 
once again BFG, you are a VERY helpful poster, I'll keep it low, and hope for the best 😀 I already increaded my aquamark score by 200, and both my 3dmark 03,01 scores by 115, so at least it did something 😛
 
Heat reduces life in the components. The more heat, the more life is reduced. Also, extreme differences in temperatures reduce the life such as turning your computer on an off multiple times a day.

Like BFG says 10% percent is the safest overclock.
 
If you want to try to go higher then stick to very small increments like 5 MHz or so and then check for artifacts and stability issues at every step.

Not for anything Sneaky, but those numbers just aren't worth the overclock. Might as well run it stock because you will not notice any difference in games. If you think you notice a speed increase, maybe 1 or 2 fps and the rest is your imagination. 🙂

 
No not really. Your DDRII is already crankin hot at 950Mhz. Thats incredibly fast. All you are probably doing is increasing the heat for nothing.
a 200 point increase in 3Dmark is nada.
 
So a jump in 3dmark03 from 3575 to 3751 doesnt justify an OC?

That's less than a 5% gain so no, you're unlikely to notice any difference at all. If you're going to stay at those settings then I would just go back to stock speeds since you're simply overclocking the card for no good reason.
 
Exactly BFG. What I'm saying is, for this minimal amount of gain, it is not worth any potential damage to your card. Not saying that your card will be damaged, its just not worth the risk for such small gains. Overclocking it further will only increase the risk of damage possibilities.

By the way, that is a very decent score for having a 1.8 P4.... Although 3DMark03 tends to be a purely video card utility unlike 3DM2001

EDIT: oh yea, PNY says that they can "detect if you've overclocked" your card. Is this actually possible?

Yea, mabye they have a special log on the card or something, ok so the final word here is what? If my OC is only a 5% gain or so, that really wouldnt reduce the card's life much at all? It runs at 49' C when playing HALO, and that's with the OC.
 
it goes for all parts assumeing you keep the voltage and temps reasonable. you might shave 20% or so of it's life but it would probably have lasted 10+ years anyway, and would have become nearly worthless well before that.

I bet they?re using Clifford Pickovers ESP technique to catch overclockers. 😀
