This is a common trap many people who prefer govt intervention in the market fall into. That proponents of free markets advocate anarchy.

The market will sort itself out but people may not like the results.

Have you ever played the Bioshock series? :p

On a more serious notes, the free market is efficient, but it fails to serve the needs of a lot of the population. It creates inhuman conditions that we as a society should not allow. We only see small echoes in the "free market" system we have now. Laisez-faire capitalism is a failure, and for good reason.

That's false. It has never been allowed, someone always interferes with the market because they feel a perceived slight because of jealousy. The argument for firefighters for instance is stupid. If they weren't a "freely" provided service some would get left out? Why? Is there no "profit" in it for then or someone else to offer the service? The biggest problem with free markets is they demand people take responsibility for their actions and/or inaction. If their inaction leaves them to starve, is that up to us to feed them? That's being against society IMO. If you demand others be your fall back, but are unwilling to contribute anything yourself? You should starve and die.

I for one love govermnet regulations to keep greed in check. Sure some regulations go to far, but to admit we dont need any is extremely naive. If we had a truly free market with no government it would just be powerful people with money enslaving the population around it to do its bidding. Gee that sounds familiar and something we fought against many times throughout history.

Would probably look like the 'Revolution" TV show right now. The US would be split up into different regions all fighting for resources and 1 powerful guy with his own standing army taking what they want from the people.

"Free market"s are far from "efficient". Even the weak form of efficient market hypothesis are wrong. The idea that the market is able to price in all risk and make an informed decision, as a whole, is wholly incorrect. The last 12 or so years prove that.

A "true" free market society cannot work unless humans become perfectly rational, as a whole, which is impossible. This is why libertopians are called that, they believe in a utopia that cannot exist. They completely ignore human greed and fear.

Are we talking about free markets or anarchy?

In reality there are only varying degrees of a welfare state.

This is the problem with neoliberal fundies, it's all or nothing.

Useless, either help figure out how to make government transparent/efficient/less corrupt or get off the soapbox.

Right wing libertarians are delusional hypocrites in practice, which is why nothing ever materializes except being used as mouthpieces for the endless empty promises of utopia from the corporations who want to screw the little guy.

It would look a lot like the mid-to-late 1800's, where we had a basically unregulated wall st, with robber barons, terrible conditions for the working class, concentration of the wealth at the very top, extreme boom-bust cycles as the asset bubbles expand and implode, extreme graft and corruption, and pretty much a shitty life for all those not named vanderbilt, carnegie, rockefeller, and morgan.

People who think an unfettered free market capitalism is the savior of all mankind are fucking morons who've never bothered to open a history book.

Perhaps those who you call "fucking morons" have read history books that a bit more advanced than your 7th grade American History textbook. Basically everything you said is wrong.

Hey, numb nuts, get with the program. We're talking free market here. This has nothing to do with your conservatard memes -- those hypotheses are a gnat to the elephant of philosophical theory. We've dismantled and are well before the civilized baseline that your memes unthinkingly assume.

LOL, that guy should have better checked the integrity of his structure. Just because you are not in the position of being the worst off possible doesn't mean that "taken advantage of" = false.

If I go over to a war-torn African country, bring back a few slaves, and whip them into working 18 hours a day for me, as long as I give them burlap bags to fashion clothes out of and I feed them adequately, am I free and clear of overly taking advantage of them?

Just because conditions are worse elsewhere doesn't mean the system is balanced.
