I had a rental Colorado when my Tacoma was in the body shop and I was very glad to get my Tacoma back. I didn't like it at all.

tacomas rust
my 05 had rust breaking on all frame seams by yr 3
among myriad of other problems
heater died
clutch pedal assembly,slave all garbage and only warranited for 1yr from yota
leaf springs
6 or 7x in for tsbs
they do have good resale.
id get a ranger/colorado/frontier/even a dakota before i bought the hot garbage that is the tacoma
oh sheet metal was paper thin to
it did ride nice however
besides that it was crap and i baby my trucks
the tacoma is the only truck to ever actually strand me, more than once
leave me w/o a vehicle for weeks..but oh.."service is free" under tsb..yeah..well my time isnt..nor is my inconvenience

the tacoma is now a running joke with my friends
theyve had issues with thier 08 trds(leafs,clutch)
and srs.
gas mileage saving neglible over fullsize


my 2 cents:
buy a real truck
a tacoma is hot garbage ..aka is a twats truck
worst close to 20k i ever spent
ill never buy or reccomend a yota again

They must have gone downhill in 05, then. My Tundra has been great, and my Tacoma was awesome until the frame rusted. Had the frame held up, I have no doubt I would still be driving it today.
 
I guess i'm of the old frame of mind that the truck is an american vehicle and that the american companies know how to do it best. In the same breath, I'd like to buy Ford because (a) it was able to survive the economic downturn without seeking help from the government, (b) I think it is the most innovative of the big 3, and (c) a Ford has been my family's main vehicle up until 3 years ago (Bronco, Taurus wagon, explorer, expedition).
 
I've been shopping used full size trucks lately. The Toyota frame rust stuff makes me kind of nervous to go that route. Swapping out faulty parts like brakes, suspension, etc is one thing but a rusted out frame can't be replaced, at least not in the DIY'er garage.

I picked up a rental while the GTO is at the body shop getting the fender replaced. It was supposed to be an economy size car but they were all out so my choices were a Grand Marquis or a full size pickup. Figured I'd take the full size and see how I like driving one daily. They gave me a brand new Dodge Ram 2500 and man what a nice truck. The thing is massive too. I've driven in new Chevy Silverado's and this thing makes those feel like a matchbox car. It feels like it will drive through anything which is good because they're calling for snow Wednesday here.

I'd say skip the mid size and go full size with a quad cab. The extra space in the cabin will let you carry four passengers no problem and the full size bed will let you carry anything you could possibly need. Gas mileage will only be a minor improvement over the mid size truck.

If you're looking small size, I'd say look at the Nissan Frontier or the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon. At this point I don't know if Toyota's got their stuff worked out.

You are not in the wrong frame of mind. The big 3 do fullsize trucks better than anyone else.
Even some of their small trucks are better than certain Japanese models.
 
I have a 2002 1500 z71 5.3l, all stock still just new brakes and a water pump...and a wheel hub. Very impressed at how long its lasted.

Only minimally drive it now, love taking it on long car trips very comfy. Will own this forever ill its wrecked stolen or falls apart
 
For a midsize/smaller truck, the 03-04 Dakota with the 4.7 is stout. Best all around truck of that vintage, without doubt.
Can't speak for full sizers, those are a mixed bag of who likes what.
