Troubleshooting: VERY unique situation

This is a very strange situation in my point of view.

My internet connection apparently "does not work" according to the message I received from Time Warner (due to a power problem? not big on details). However, the modem shows that there is a signal for the connection.

The computers do support the situation because they cannot obtain a network address or have limited/no connectivity (definitely none). STRANGELY, my macbook pro can obtain a connection after I reset the modem and switch. The other computers are Dell and a HP.

I tested the switch via LAN games, and it seems that it works just fine. Thus, is there possibly some unique ability about the ethernet adaptar in my laptop?

Note: I had to reset everything (including replugging in stuff) to get the internet to work. At times, the cable connection is lost, and when it comes back on, the internet doesn't work for my laptop (so I simply reset again).

Thanks. Let me know if you need more info.

We have had cable for several months now. The problem is recent (probably associated with the storm a two days ago). I doubt that the modem has a problem.

qpwoeir, are you using a SOHO router? If the answer is no, perhaps they finally implemented a limit on the number of devices you can have behind your modem directly pulling addresses.

cmetz got it, it sounds like you are using a switch. You have one mac address registered in their system which is your macbook's mac address. You need a router instead of the switch.

Bingo.

BTW can use switches all you like, as long as they are AFTER a router. Modem -> Router -> ANYTHING ELSE
