Gotta find out if this is an OK problem to have or one that need immediate attention. My PSU has a high pitched whistle or squeal whether the computer is turned on or off. If you pull the power cord out of the computer the whistle/squeal dies out in about 1.5 seconds. Plug the power cord back in and it starts to whistle/squeal again. Now it is a very faint whistle... but with my good hearing it may bug me. I have the Antec Sonata II 450 W PSU in my computer... do any of you have any suggestions or ideas for me?

UPDATE 3/20/2006: Newegg has no problem with an replacement... the only catch is I would also have to send the case back. They suggested I call Antec and see if they would do only the PSU. Antec will do only the PSU to return, however, I have to mail my PSU to them, then they will within 72 hours send me a replacement PSU back out. So I think I am going to buy a PSU locally and when my Antec PSU gets here.. I'll just sell it.

Sounds like capacitor whine to me, email antec and tell them, you might be able to RMA it.

Yeppers! Capacitor leak! Time for rMA or replacement before the cap goes POP and takes something with it, which by most if not all power supply warranties will not be covered and be void because it was caused by a power supply by the other part maker.

Well I bought it from newegg last fall so I think that I will be in good hands... I have emailed both Newegg and Antec about the issue today. I will post a follow up and let you know my end results.

That's an interesting issue, my PSU or MB (never checked closely) use to have coil whine (high-pitched noise), but only when it was powered on. I know the PSU still uses(wastes:() electricity with power off, though it's weird that it would whine when off. It should be ok if it happened only when it were on. Mines actually went away after a few weeks strangely. Good luck with the technical support people.

I've had nothing but perfect luck with all rMA issues as far as newegg goes.

Yeah, there's just so many things that keep the diodes warm while it is supposedly off that a study showed if we all just switched our TV's so that they took a bit longer to come on when you hit the on switch, we could shut down 4 macro sized coal burning plants in the States... think about that!

If I choose to sell the Antec PSU I get back in the RMA... what PSU should I look at getting as a replacement?
