Hi All,

I'm trying to fix my friend's desktop PC. One day he tried to turn it on, and it did nothing. It's a fairly nice machine (Gateway DX4860-UB33P) with an i5 processor, 8gb ram, HDMI, etc.

First thing I did was remove all RAM, and swapped the power supply for one that I know works. The power supply LED shows it's getting power, but upon hitting the power button, nothing happens. I used the wires (red and black) that had been removed from another case to determine if the power switch on this machine was not connected, but again, nothing happens when attempting to turn the machine on. Neither the case fan nor chip fan spin when attempting to turn on the machine (both were tested on another machine and do work).

Usually (even when testing a motherboard with issues), at the fans spin up. Given that this doesn't even happen on this machine, would the likely issue be the motherboard? Though both the MB and Chip could both be bad, it's usually one or the other (at least in my experience). I don't have a 1155 board to test, and am trying to narrow the issue down to the board (or chip, or both) before asking my friend to buy specific parts.

He prefers not to have to purchase both a chip and MB, but if necessary, he will. The other thing he really likes about this PC is the case. It has so many ports (I think there are 10+ usb ports on the outside of the case, as well as memory card readers). If it's determined the issue is the motherboard, is it likely that I'll have to mod the connections so that the current configuration of the ports on the case will work with another motherboard?

Thanks for reading. I've never had a situation in which the case does nothing, so was wondering if anyone else encountered this issue and has recommendations on isolating the main failure.
