i'm having some difficulty configuring file sharing for my home network. currently, i have two workstations both on the same workgroup. They are connected via my router and have client for microsoft networks and the file sharing service installed.

my win xp computer can see and access my win 2k computer's files. For example, when clicking on a shared folder it will pop up the dialog box asking for the login name and password.

however, my win 2k computer cannot access shared folder of win xp. i mean it sees the shares but when i click on it says "access is denied". so i go back to my win xp and try to give it share permission. but when i try that it doesn't even list that it sees my win 2k machine on the share permission dialog box.

this is a weird issue and i'm can't seem to resolve it. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I have the same problem. I fixed it one time but can't remember what I did. Then I moved and formatted my pc and I have the problem again. I'll look into the link provided by Jack. Let me know if it helps you or if you figure it out and I'll do the same.

By Default Win2000 disables the guess account. Try enableing the guest acount and trying it. If that doesn't work, set the guess account password to whatever. Next time you try to access those win2000 resources, xp should prompt you for a username and password.
username: guest
password: whatever

Additionally, Windows 2000 and previous realize NetBIOS with a NetBEUI driver. Windows XP uses NetBIOS frames in TCP/IP packets. They often have difficulty. You have to hunt down NetBEUI on the XP install CD. It's generally easier to simply bind IPX/SPX to both machines.
