Well I've decided to try vmware so that I can install win2k server to run a mail server but I can't get win2k server to install.

I've setup the virtual machine as pretty much stock, I boot to the cd-rom and windows installs fine untill it gets to the GUI part where it wants a key and where you specify a user. I enter in everything and it looks like it's installing and setting everything up fine but then all the sudden it just goes right back to the initial GUI setup and it asks me the same questions over and over again and I never actually get to a desktop or even a logon screen.

It appears to be "resetting" after or during the hardware setup, the part where windows says your screen may flicker and turn off a couple of times.

Does anyone know what's going on?

then I would suggest using Virtual PC instead of VMWare. I have had many unsuccesfull installations with VMWare. PLus, Virtual PC runs much faster and uses less system rsources imo.

Weird, I've done this literally a zillion times without any problems. Any chance the CD is bad (the 2k install one)?

I figured it out, I was able to find some info on their site.

If anyone else has this problem you can find the fix here.

Well now I have another problem, I can't get any of the newer windows updates to install, I did get service pack 3 to go but everything else just gives me a failed to install message at windows update.

Well I did some digging around and I found the solution on the news groups.

Known problem.

"For now the workaround (until the bug is fixed) is to disable the
Vmware Tools Service.
The steps to disable the VMware tools service
1) Launch the control panel.
2) Double-click the administrative tools.
3) Double-click Services.
4) Right-click the VMware Tools Services and select stop.
5) Then perform your windows updates on those security patches and it
should work fine.
6) re-start VMware Tools Services"
