Trouble with sound

Hello, I've recently ran into some problems with my computer. Everytime I play a file, whether it's an mp3, video, or game that involves sound, the sound will start to silence at random intervals. I've tried system restore, reinstalling my codec, my soundcard driver, and made sure that my speakers are plugged in all the way but nothing seems to work. Can anybody help me shed some light to this mystery?

have you tried it with other speakers or headphones to make absolutely sure it's not your speakers?
