i got a plextor 40/12/40A recently, and i've been having some problems with it.
i use nero 5.8 *whatever the number of the newest one is*, and when i try to copy/burn a cd, it gives me an error message saying that the cd-r is not empty and that i should insert a new disk that is compatible/empty. i even put in the cd-r that plextor gave me. i guess this might be a problem w/ nero, because it burns fine with the windows XP native *windows media player*. however, when i connected up my old cd-rw *iomega 8x4x32x, nero had no problem with the cd's.

now, my other problem, is that when plextor does accept my cd-r, the burned cd *audio cd* has static in the background when i play it. i tried using the native to burn/copy audio cd's, but there is still static in the background. i read a bit and heard sumthing about the cd-r's not being high quality so it couldn't keep up with the speed of nero or sumthing, so i tried burning at 32x, then at 24x but the results are still the same.

i updated my mobo driver *VIA*, i tried to upgrade the firmware, but i run into some error when i try. it says "SRB is aborted" then "Firmware update failed". so im not sure what else to do. i checked my IDE controller and switched the method thing to DMA and burned, but i still get static in my burned cd's.

any ideas on how to fix these problems?
thnx

what brand of cd-r's are you using? i've heard memorex and khypermedia's tend to have problems with high speed burners ..

i usually like to use Taiyo Yuden CD-R's ... branded as Fujifilm or Sony's .. they're reliable and durable ... never had a bad burn with those yet ... and no static problems yet ...

good luck =]

If you are getting an error message while trying to firmware update, you probably have a problem with your hardware. Try it in another machine, and see if it will firmware update. If so, the problem lies with your computer. If not, RMA that Plextor.
