Trouble with networking...

I have the SMC Barricade router, and am trying to network 2 PCs. I have a high-speed internet connection I wish to share, and I would also like file sharing access.
I plugged this computer into the router, and the cable modem into the WAN port. I was able to access the internet fine with all settings in the controll panel for networking set to "auto detect" or some such thing, as it is a DHCP connection.
Then I tried plugging in the other computer, with the settings exactly the same, byte for byte. It would not connect to the internet. I opened up the "network neighorhood." It saw itself there, but not my other computer. I fiddled. It still wouldnt connect to the internet. I then unplugged this computer from the router and put the other one, the troublesome one, in by itself. Still no luck. I try to connect to the net and get nada.
And now, the million dollar question:
WTF?? lol, why won't the other computer work? some secret I don't know about?
LMK if you have any ideas. Thanks. 🙂

make sure your computer names are different. Remember, you need TCP/IP installed for your broadband, and I like NetBIOS for my file sharing... Make sure your internal IP's are setup correctly, and your subnet masks are the same...

I have TCP/IP and IPX on both computers, settings are the same. I did not set anything for my IP or subnet mask because I have DHCP--I figured it would find its own IP. Remember the settings are the same for both of them, but only one works. What could be wrong?

Yes, I have tried it in both the first port and the second. I would like to think that I have narrowed the problem down to anything but the network settings in the controll panel, because I definitely can not find anything wrong with those settings, and they are identical to those of the computer which worked on the network. Does anyone else have any suggestions? has any experienced this before? is there something I'm missing?
Thanks 🙂

I had that problem with a cable modem once and the only way I could get around it was to have two network cards in one of the machines and use it as a proxy server (you can use ICS for this) for the other machine... Kind of a bummer, but it worked.

They need to set up on the same workgroup (commonly set as "workgroup&quot😉 and different names. Try setting (Under properties for TCP/IP for adapter) the IP for one as 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2 and the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 for both. Make sure Client for Microsoft Network is enabled and that you log on to each computer at bootup.

I have DNS config disabled, Gateway = none, Wins Res = disabled, Binding to ATM = no, but check the set as default box = yes.

Check the properties of you NIC also. Make sure "full duplex" under the advanced tab is chosen. My laptop would not show up in Network Neighborhood until I did so.

Enable file and printer sharing, if desired, then double click on Control Panel and right click on any drive or printer you want shared. It will then make you assign a password to access it.

You'll probably have to configure your browser to use the network instead of the dialup adapter also. Look in Internet options and "connection" on the second puter. I still have dialup so that is where I am not sure. I get cable in a month or two. I'll have to figure it out then myself.

Good luck.

[edit] I just read the previous post and he is right. You do need two network cards in the primary desktop. One for the cable or DSL and one to network other systems. Or you have to have a DSL ROUTER to split to each machine with one nic(is that SMC?). [/edit]

I do have a router to split the cable connection. I believe I am automatically assigned an IP, so I can not fill that in. I will try your suggestions, and report back to this thread.
Thanks

Ok, I'm assuming you are using only 10baseT cards, right? Double check on the workgroup name as stated above. If you are not seeing the second computer in network neighborhood, then it is something whith the settings on the second computer. The computer names have to be dif too. In your IE connection setup, make sure that "never dial a connection" is checked, and that all the lan settings are NOT checked. What type of router do you have? Nevermind, answered my own question. TCP/IP should be the default for your nic, and try installing NetBUI, seems to work fairly decent on my computer. Remove Windows logon, making sure that "Client for Microsoft Networks" is the primary logon. For security, head on over to https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 They will explain how to "unbind" file and print sharing for your nic's. Could it be a bad cable? Try the same cable on both computers. Let me know how you make out.
