We got internet from our landlord before and the modem was set upstairs guessing about 50ft of cable away. Since he has left we have botten the same modem and aquired the internet though the same company.
I have a ASUS A7N8X Deluxe with the 2 Network Cards on the motherboard.. in the old setup I would just plug the internet into the 3Com LAN and out the Nvidia to my friends computer. All worked no problems.. we are assuming he had a router upstaires before.
Now I can get the internet when plugged into the 3Com LAN, but not the Nvidia LAN. If fact the only time I can get the lights of the Nvidia Lan port to light up is when it is connected straight to the 3com port, not anywhere else (internet or friends computer)... this I feel is very strange. My friend has the exact same Nvidia onboard LAN and it acts the same way as mine.
I have tried uninstalling (via the bios and Windows XP) the network card that doesn't recognize the internet and reinstalling it with same results.
Today we bought a router and a cheap Network card, tried the network card in both systems: both couldn't detect the internet, and also the Router does not seem to set up the WAN (it is connected downstaires ie. 40ft away from the modem).
We would like to have any setup which gives us both the internet and not just me.
Our tools:
Both have Windows XP installed
1 router
4 network cards (3 onboard, 1 detects the internet, others not)
an 1394 port and USB ports (can internet be shared via these?)
Lotsa LAN cable, assuming no crossover cable (don't know how we had computers connected directly without a crossover cable, is this possible?)
Please share any thoughts on why the setup does not seem to work and how the only LAN port that gets both green and orange lights ever is the 3COM..
Any recommondations to how to set up the internet for both computers?
