Trouble with Networking 2 computers to DSL internet 50ft cable

We got internet from our landlord before and the modem was set upstairs guessing about 50ft of cable away. Since he has left we have botten the same modem and aquired the internet though the same company.

I have a ASUS A7N8X Deluxe with the 2 Network Cards on the motherboard.. in the old setup I would just plug the internet into the 3Com LAN and out the Nvidia to my friends computer. All worked no problems.. we are assuming he had a router upstaires before.

Now I can get the internet when plugged into the 3Com LAN, but not the Nvidia LAN. If fact the only time I can get the lights of the Nvidia Lan port to light up is when it is connected straight to the 3com port, not anywhere else (internet or friends computer)... this I feel is very strange. My friend has the exact same Nvidia onboard LAN and it acts the same way as mine.

I have tried uninstalling (via the bios and Windows XP) the network card that doesn't recognize the internet and reinstalling it with same results.

Today we bought a router and a cheap Network card, tried the network card in both systems: both couldn't detect the internet, and also the Router does not seem to set up the WAN (it is connected downstaires ie. 40ft away from the modem).

We would like to have any setup which gives us both the internet and not just me.

Our tools:
Both have Windows XP installed
1 router
4 network cards (3 onboard, 1 detects the internet, others not)
an 1394 port and USB ports (can internet be shared via these?)
Lotsa LAN cable, assuming no crossover cable (don't know how we had computers connected directly without a crossover cable, is this possible?)

Please share any thoughts on why the setup does not seem to work and how the only LAN port that gets both green and orange lights ever is the 3COM..

Any recommondations to how to set up the internet for both computers?

It would REALLY HELP to know what kind of service you have, DSL or cable. My guess is you used to be running ICS on the one computer and somehow got that configuration screwed up.

There's no reason the router won't work, I'm sure it's just a matter of configuration of the components. Without knowing what kind of service you have, it's hard to get started. It would also be nice to know the make/model of the router you're trying to interface to.

Did you actually read and follow the installation instructions for the router? Can you access the router's configuration pages?

As said in the topic, DSL service. Yes the internet was connected and internet sharing was used. Are these settings permenent, and stay after we uninstalled the components and start all over?

The router was bought just to see if the NICs could detect a connection to the router. I've set up the same DSL service on a DLink router, but the Inexo 4 port we are trying to use seems not to get any WAN. There is no DHCP renewal in the router, but I am assuming it does it automatically after reseting.

We don't need the router and if we could figure out why 3 NICs seem dead and unresponding to the internet or to each other then we could set the LAN the same way we had before with Internet sharing.

Is there a special way in Win XP to completely reset all Networking history and settings, or do we need to reformat.. because they seem to stay after we remove completely from the system, and redetect the NICs.

Reformatting the Hard Drive??? You better off buying Snake Oil!

First step forget about the Internet

1. Equip each computer with one NIC (only one). WinXP will automatticaly rests it self.

2. Connect the two computers to the Router and establish a working LAN between your computer and the second computer.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Setting and Sharing.

Link: Installing & Sharing
When it works attend to get Internet.

Could be that your Landlord took care of PPPOE and you neglecting to do so, and Mr. PPPOE got angry.

Link to: DSL PPPOE and Cable/DSL Routers.

We have determined the cable in the wall to be a crossover cable, and the on between our computers not to be. Our setup now is DSL modem -cross over cable-3 Com NIC-Nvidia NIC-crossover cable-Nvidia NIC on seperate computer

I don't know why the crossover cable works in the 3Com NIC from the modem.. but it explains why it doesn't work in the router/the other NICs.
