Trouble with NEC-3540A CD/DVD

All of a sudden I am having trouble writing on my DVD. Windows Explorer can read what's on the CD but when I go to write it says no CD in yet. I am using 52x Verbatim CD's that have worked fine before and are compatible with this drive. Nero was working but now it even fails on the write. Everything on my system works fine, no virus or spyware. I use Webroot Spy Sweeper 4.5 and ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2006. Possibly I cleaned something in the registry that screwed it up but don't know what.
Would appreciate any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem. Thanks in advance.

you could do the normal:
make sure DMA is checked in dev manager
remove all opticals in safe mode and let windows redetect.
revert to MS generic IDE drivers, not NV

however it just may be the drive taking a crap, so another $36 must be splurged.

Thanks for feedback. I just can't understand what is happening. When I pull up a data CD and try to put something on to a new or partially written CD, it says access is denied. For a few weeks, Windows explorer couldn't write data on my CD's but Nero could. Now Nero cannot write to my CD's and it cannot recognize the name of the CD's. But I can still play CD music.
I did delete the drive and had Windows reinstall it. My primary IDE says "Ultra DMA 2- Ultra 33" for primary drive. I keep thinking the drive is ok and it is something in Windows.
For the record, I bought the drive from Newegg 9 months ago and called them today. Even though it is OEM, they said they have a warranty and gave me an RMA to return it for a replacement. I just don't want to get the replacement and have the same problem so any additional ideas would be very much appreciated.
Thanks again.

Bozo Galora - Have not received the replacement yet so do not know if 3540 or 3550.
Fixxxer0 - Would appreciate any insight you get into fixing your drive
Thanks
