Just the other day I purchased a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical and have been having problems with it from the start. I'm not sure what is at fault and I dont know if this problem is unique to this mouse only. Ok, here's the scoop. I connected it to the first USB port and immediately got the driver installation prompt. So, I instructed it to install the proper drivers (Microsoft USB Intellimouse Optical (intellipoint)). After the drivers were installed, I installed the latest Intellipoint, 3.2 (also tried 3.1). After rebooting, I immediately went into IntelliPoint to set the mouse up. The first thing I did was adjust the pointer speed. Wanting to see just how smooth this mouse really is, I jacked the speed up as far as it would go. Eureeeeka!! The pointer jerks and stutters and looks like its walking up a flight of stairs when I move it diagonally. I set it back down to the middle speed setting and it smoothened out, but is still too slow for me (even with acceleration). Next I put it to the game test. I fired up Quake 3 and quickly took note of the slower pointer speed. I loaded a map and gave it a test. It felt a slight bit more accurate but was still too slow. So I jumped into the control menu to adjust the mouse speed setting. It was maxed out! I went back to the desktop and connected to an IRC server to ask around. I managed to find someone with the same mouse. He was running Windows 2000 and stated that his was smooth as silk on the desktop at max speed. So I began thinking...'maybe the problem is my OS...Win 98.' I reformatted, reinstalled 98 and still got the same problem. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I dont get this thing straightened out soon, I'm going to take it back and exchange it for a Logitech MouseMan Wheel optical.
