Trouble with my MS optical mouse!

Just the other day I purchased a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical and have been having problems with it from the start. I'm not sure what is at fault and I dont know if this problem is unique to this mouse only. Ok, here's the scoop. I connected it to the first USB port and immediately got the driver installation prompt. So, I instructed it to install the proper drivers (Microsoft USB Intellimouse Optical (intellipoint)). After the drivers were installed, I installed the latest Intellipoint, 3.2 (also tried 3.1). After rebooting, I immediately went into IntelliPoint to set the mouse up. The first thing I did was adjust the pointer speed. Wanting to see just how smooth this mouse really is, I jacked the speed up as far as it would go. Eureeeeka!! The pointer jerks and stutters and looks like its walking up a flight of stairs when I move it diagonally. I set it back down to the middle speed setting and it smoothened out, but is still too slow for me (even with acceleration). Next I put it to the game test. I fired up Quake 3 and quickly took note of the slower pointer speed. I loaded a map and gave it a test. It felt a slight bit more accurate but was still too slow. So I jumped into the control menu to adjust the mouse speed setting. It was maxed out! I went back to the desktop and connected to an IRC server to ask around. I managed to find someone with the same mouse. He was running Windows 2000 and stated that his was smooth as silk on the desktop at max speed. So I began thinking...'maybe the problem is my OS...Win 98.' I reformatted, reinstalled 98 and still got the same problem. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I dont get this thing straightened out soon, I'm going to take it back and exchange it for a Logitech MouseMan Wheel optical.

I have the Optical with the 3.2 soft. and running win98se. Don't have a problem, and it's smooth even at max speed. What surface are you using it on?

I have tried every surface that I can think of. Still the same thing at max speed. Any idea as to what could be causing that?

Sugadaddy, try setting it to max speed then very slowly move the pointer diagonally and see if it's smooth. Mine is very 'jagged' and appears to stair step. It does the same thing on my laptop.

i think your problem is the "MAX SPEED", i was helping a friend install his computer just a few days ago and encountered the same problem, the intellimouse optical , not explorer, but when the pointer speed and acceleration was too high, it was jittery and shuffled around a lot, it was fixed easily by putting the acceleration on medium and lowering the poibnter speed to the middle range...
