Im have a little bit of trouble hooking my compaq presario 2100 to my home network. I am running a desktop and (trying ) the laptop on a linksys router. The destop will connect to the internet but the laptop wont. I have run through the wizard but it still cant seem to get an ip address. This is not on a wireless network (yet) so i am connecting through cables. I know the lines are good cause they work on the desktop. IF anyone has any ideas at all i would really appreciate it.

With your laptop hooked into your network, check what the IP is. If its a APIPA (169.254.xx.xx) then your laptop has not picked up an IP from the router assuming you are set to pick up one automatically. Are you running any type of software firewall? If so, you may want to disable it until you get connected. Check cables for correct port into the router.

That happens with my laptop too...the other computers pick up IP addresses no problems, even if the cable is unplugged then re-connected. The IP's on the desktops are 169.254.xxx.xxx then you just do an ipconfig /renew and it picks one up, but the laptop won't

Forget the brain-dead network wizard. In the TCP/IP properties, set it to obtain the IP and DNS addresses automatically, that's usually all it takes if your router is setup with DHCP, most are.
