trouble with gigantic HSF and epox 8K7A

OK, I haven't installed a hsf in a while and I'm a little rusty, but here goes. I just got an Epox 8K7A and a retail 1.4 athlon with a big ass HSF. I read the manual on how to install the hsf just to make sure I don't screw up. This is the kind that has the metal clip (I hate that clip with a passion) Anyway, to my knowledge I'm supposed to tilt the hsf to the side, lock on one clip, then tilt it back and lock on the other clip. Of course there have to be big capacitors or something right next to the cpu. This prevents me from tilting the hsf in a certain direction. I've tried tilting it on one direction, but then it's impossible to be able to clip the other end on because of the way it's designed. Should I go with my gut reaction and just force the mofo on there? I'm just afraid that I'll break it.....

I would be very careful about forcing it, it is VERY easy to crack your chip if you apply pressure at an angle against the chip. If there is a way to press directly down on the HSF and get it on, this would be the ticket, just watch your angle, and remove the mobo from the case and lay it on a flat surface as well.
You can safely apply large forces directly down on the chip, but any angle at all in that force will crack your core and kill the chip. If you have someone there, you might have them press down on the HSF while you attack the clips.
Good Luck,

Also, if you are careful, you can bend the large capacitors a little. You will find that little force is required to move them just a little, but stop there, as any more force can tear things up but good. Just the pressure from your pinky pushing lightly can't hurt a thing, and may provide just enough room to help.

thanks man, I'm now going to go into that room, get real pissed off, lunge at the mobo, lay the smack down on it (i.e. push directly down) and then force the evil clips on there!!

$%^$#%!!!!!!!! It still won't go on!!! i got a large screw driver and shoved the metal clip down all the way to the socket clip, but the clip isn't out far enough to reach around the the socket clip. Basically, i just goes down and hit on the socket itself. I want to murder whoever invented the clipping mechanism....

exactly what hsf are you using? there's plenty of room for my wbk38. also, DO NOT tilt the hsf to get one side on first. side loading it like this is probably the main reason people crack their cpu cores. be patient and keep the load flat and even.

I was using the default hsf that came in the retail box. its not even labeled. I used a big flathead screwdriver and forced the clip to lock.

Sounds like you got lucky - If you need a big flathead screwdriver to get it on you were probably pretty close to crushing your CPU.

Also, if you think the retail HSF is huge, you should see some of the higher-performance ones! Take a look at the Swiftech MC462-A - It's probably triple the size of the retail..
