Trouble with flat mate

OK - This guy me and a friend live with is a bit of a wierdo. We are all out on a work placement year in Italy and so were kind of forced to live with him for rents sake.

Anyway, he is VERY VERY VERY reserved, and we gave up talking to him after about a month of asking him out with us on nights out etc and him saying no. One day, literally out of nowhere, he started a fight with me in the flat. So I report him to the university, and of course they can't do anything as there were no witnesses. The guy decided he wants to move out, but demands his deposit back which we can't afford, at least until we get another flatmate.

so, it was agreed that we would look for another flatmate to replace him, and then he could move out and get his deposit back. Instead, he secretly moved out without telling anyone until he had left. He took the house and room keys with him and said he wouldn't give them back until he got his deposit back - In this phone call, he also insulted my friend a dozen + 1 times.

Now the way I see it is that, he isn't entitled to the deposit at all as he broke the contract, and even though we were willing to pay him it back, after this latest incident (this, and the fight before) he shouldn't get back a penny/cent/euro

What do you guys think? (The deposit was 400Euro)

Cliffs:

- Flatmate starts fight with me
- Says he's moving out, wants his deposit back
- Moves out without any notice, and takes flat keys with him DEMANDING deposit back
- Should he?
 
I feel like there is a huge part missing to this story.

On the other hand, shouldn't the landlord worry about this?
 
Haha, I was thinking the same.

Thing is, my other flatmate stupidly got the Uni involved, and they seem to think he should get the deposit back. obviously I don't want to fsk with Uni, esp when my placement could be cancelled. But the way I see it is that it isn't a Uni related matter, and he isn't legally entitled to anything? Right?

If Uni isn't hte landlod then they're not entitled to anything.
Since you were all placed together by Uni they have an interest in mediating the disagreement, assuming the retard has gone to them with a grievance (and I think you can safely assume that), they will try to reach a middle ground.

The retard broke a contract with a private landlord, you need to go to the landlord and get them on your side, find a flatmate ASAP.
