trouble with AT&T DSL

So first off, their tech support is the worse I have ever seen. I was on hold for 1 hour w/o any response. Another time, it was 30 minutes and guess what? They asked me to unplug the modem (lol). When it didn't work, they transferred me. I gave up on them since.

Anyway, the problem is that the connect doesn't always work. All the LEDs on the modem are one (power, DSL, LAN, Internet) but I can't connect to the internet (it uses PPoE). It will say "the phone line is busy." Does this means there is something wrong with their network?

Does anybody have the same problem as I am?

Did you install the AT+T PPoE software on your PC?

You dont need to do that and its not very good software.

You should be able to connect the phone line to the DSL modem, then the LAN connection to your PC (better way would be using a router, but you didnt mention if you had one), then make a new connection and enter in your DSL username and password.

are there any DSL filters on the line going to the DSL modem?

If you have the standard modem that they give out then you have no need for a PPPoE client on your computer. The modem handles this and gives you a nat'ed 192 address. If the DSL/Internet light comes on then you have a good connection to the telco, IE Filters shouldn't be a problem.
If you are using a router then you should have the router in bridge mode and let the router handle the PPPoE, But in no case should you be handling the PPPoE on your computer. Unless they have started doing something new and there modems no longer do any type of PPPoE (very unlikely, I replace ATT DSL all the time at work)(I work for a ISP here.)

OK so what I did was I uninstalled all the AT&T software and manually created a network connection with the user name and password.

However, I found out that if if access the modem using a browser (192.168.1.1), I can connect to the PPoE here as well w/o dialing AT&T.

Right now, I only have the Broadxent BritePort DSL modem that was sent to me. I haven't got to the router thing yet.

BTW, how do I bridge a router? It is not physically connected to the computer so I don't see it on Network Connections at all.

How are you connection the modem to your computer?
It should go Phone Line>DSL Modem>Ethernet_to_computer
if you are given a 192 ip from the modem your internet should work.

OK so thanks for all the help. But I don't need help with any connection, hardware advice. I know I have everything right. I just wanna know if anyone is having the same connection problem as I am w/ AT&T at nighttime.

At&t has been great for me 4 years all good and I hate to say the few times I needed support when I had some issues when upgrading to a higher speed connection they were helpful and friendly with almost no wait. If you are still having issues you might want to try the ATT direct Forum Here It can take a couple days for a tech to get back to you but they are very helpful as well.
