Trouble with abit ic7-max3 & 2.8 overclock

Got my new system up and running last night. Have been reading the forums for some time and have previous OC experience on earlier systems. Here's the important components:

abit ic7-max3
p4 2.8c
ocz PC4000 EL ddram

I seemed to have good success OC'ing with CPU core set right at or below 1.6. Anything more than that seemed to cause more instability -- I though increasing core (I never tried above 1.675) should increase stability? Regardless, I have the following settings:
FSB 220-230, beyond 230 would not get to windows at any settings i tried
AGP PCI Fixed 33/66
mem ratio: 1:1
mem voltage: 2.8
CPU Core: 1.6

Here's what I didn't understand:
1. Why can't I increase core above 1.6 to increase stability? I was targeting 3.5Ghz with this equipment and didn't think it was a pipe dream given the better quality equipment I bought. I know the core may be a bit low at 1.6 to achieve those FSB speeds, but again increasing above 1.6 yielded crappy results at these FSB speeds (230+) (usually requiring a CMOS short)

2. When I change the memory ratio to anything except 1:1 (5:4 or 3:2), POST gives several very long beeps, and I have to short CMOS jumper to get back into setup, so I must leave at 1:1. Is it the EL type ocz I have or something, I don't recall ever hearing anyone else mention this problem. At 1:1, what upward limits does this ratio impose - poor memory timings?

3. The memory timings default to "by SPD" which I guess is like auto settings? Their numbers are grayed out at 3-8-4-4, I don't know if that means that's actually what they're at. Seems to me those are slow timings, should I set them to 2.5-7-3-3?

So what should I do with my given setup and situation? I'd be happy with an overclock from 3.3 to 3.5. Of course, I'd like to get the best performance out of it as possible and I'll take some risks if need be. But I have a feeling this is 99.99% my inexperience with this mobo / ram and their settings.

Thanks guys!

damn we have exact same problem:

cept mine is:

2.6C
PC4200 geil 1x512
Max 3

but i can go to windows w/ 235 fsb, but it will reboot after 5 minutes or less.. and i cant even go 230 fsb without freezing up.. my settings are:

mem settings: 1:1 3 8 4 4
cpu voltage: 1.575
230 fsb

pls if u guys have any info why we are having this probs, please post it up..

btw, i have the latest bios for my max 3 1.2 bios, oh ya, im using stock hsf.

i got the same board and mushkin pc3500

i can't get my memory over like 215 with tite timings or 220 with loose timings

but i can get the cpu pretty high but the heat of midday kills my overclock

I'm suprised you can't use any of those other mem ratios tho

i'm still trying to find my perfect overclock with my setup too
these boards are nice
just find the limit of each component one at a time by isolating it
then find a setting that best maxes them all out
ohhh and get a memtest86 boot cd so you don't corrupt windows

good luck

good luck

I've heard other OCZ users complain about the 1:1 mem problem. Glad I spent so much money on these sticks.

Also hear the max3 (or is it ic7?) has a 2.8 vdimm limit and that's its undervolted.

And I guess I'm the last to know that 2.8's are crappy overclockers.

sigh... oh well, friday =

yeah it's the ic7g and the other ic7 that have the limit
my max3 goes up to 3.2v
the 2.8 is 2.78
but the 2.9 is way high like 2.9 to 3.09 fluctuating
havn't tryed higher

I got one of those with the most powerfull 92mm fan i've ever seen on it
still not nearly as good as water cooling tho

i had to mod my max3 to get it to fit right btw

i had to take my dremel to the otes cooling system and to the northbridge heatsink

only needed to shave off like 1/8" tho

also my P4m didn't have a heatspreader so i had to drill the mounting holes in the heatsink deeper so it would actually touch the die

you might not have to mod the board tho since you got a heatspeader it might make it sit high enough
but i'm not sure
