Trouble setting up Gmail account in Thunderbird

I am trying to setup my new gmail account in Thunderbird but am having trouble.

When I create a new account in Thunderbird and enter my gmail info, it says password or username is incorrect. I have triple checked that it is right.

I found a guide that says what server settings to enter for gmail and that still does not work. When I go to inbox and enter password, it keeps saying login to server failed. I have tried the default settings and it doesn't work.

Ok, it looks like gmail has blocked thunderbird access to my gmail account. It seems thunderbird does not have very good security. So I am guessing that is why I can't get gmail setup through thunderbird.

So now, is there another client I could use to setup my gmail account through?

Do you have 2 factor authentication enabled for your gmail acct.? If so you will have to generate an application password specifically for thunderbird.

With one machine I worked on I had that problem. Going to the gmail account in a browser and under settings/ settings/ forward, POP, IMAP; I set IMAP to enabled and everything synced.

I never needed or found the 2 stage setting until I read this thread and went to settings/ settings/ accounts and imports/ other account settings/ sign-in and security. My 2 stage verification is already off and the other machine is fixed and gone.

I expect I'll run into this again.

Jim
