Trouble reading HDD done with Disk Overlay

Helping out a guy with P166. I had installed a couple of years ago, a 15gb Maxtor in it. In order to read the full capacity I had to use Maxblast and all was well. The other night trouble started. He was unable to get the PC going. From what was going on, I felt his motherboard quit as it no longer recognized the drive. Put the drive into a working PC and it found the 15gig but once into Windows the drive wasn't seen. Put into another one and same thing. Bios recognizes the drive but Windows doesn't see it. Ran the Maxtor disk diagnostics and the drive passes both tests. Then I tried using Maxblast 3 to read the drive. It starts, sees that there is a drive there, and thats it. Keeps going back to the start screen in a loop.

Any ideas on what else I could try to read the data on this drive?

Almost every one of the overlay prog's I've seen has caused problems. At this point, a P166 is good for DOS machine control applications, and not much else. The value of your time, and the relatively low cost of an inexpensive new system may make that more reasonable than trying to flog old technology into working when at it's best, it won't keep up with what you want to do with it.

Fry's Sunday ad -- Athlon XP2000+ and ECS K7VTA3 mobo $64.99

Office Max Sunday ad -- 512 MB Kinston PC2700 DDR RAM $49.99 after mail in rebate. (Kingston is pretty good about their rebates).

Similar deals are available every week. See Hot Deals and other deal forums to find out what's available in your area. If you're sharp, you can build a very decent machine for under $400, not including the monitor.

I agree the old one is toast, but I forgot to mention, there is one file that I would like to get off of here for him. Hence, my reason for wanting to get it going, just for a few minutes. If there was any way of doing this, I would love to know.

The Maxblast prog should have a setting to remove it from the drive, hopefully without destroying the data. You can also use the diagnostics in the prog to see if the drive is corrupted.
