Trouble Reading Files

Hi,

Lately, I am having trouble to read certain files on my hard drive. Here are the situations when I tried to access certain files on the drive:

1. Windows display error message: "Cannot copy MY FILE: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"
2. Computer crash and automatically reboot
3. Computer crash and display blue screen

So, I downloaded Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows and here is the test result:

Test Option: QUICK TEST
Model Number: WDC WD10EADS-00L5B1
Firmware Number: 01.01A01
Capacity: 1000.20 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2!
Test Time: 19:27:15, January 13, 2010

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD10EADS-00L5B1
Firmware Number: 01.01A01
Capacity: 1000.20 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: PASS
Test Time: 21:01:36, January 13, 2010

Is this mean the hard drive is dying? What should I do now? Claim for replacement? Is there anyway to recover unreadable files on the harddrive? Thanks.

CRC errors (followed by system instability) is usually an indication that the hard drive has bad sectors, and there is data on those bad sectors.

If you did a normal format during Windows installation, any existing bad sectors are identified and are quarantined from being written to. Developing new bad sectors after data has already been written is an indication that the drive may be a lemon, and possibly could be dying.

If you did a quick format during Windows installation, you made the wrong choice.

There are ways to possibly save your data. Read this
