The background
I have been using a laptop for the past few years as I was on the road going to and from university and using it in class. Now that I'm graduated and settled into a full-time job, I decided to buy a desktop. So I bought myself a shiny new Dell (I just don't do much gaming anymore and don't need something super-fancy) which arrived yesterday.
What I want to do
Because I have so much data that I want to transfer over, I want to set up a network that will just allow me to copy files from the laptop (running XP Pro) to the desktop (running Vista Home Premium Edition). I have done this before using a cross-over cable when I first got a laptop and transferred everything from my then-current desktop to it and when I transferred everything from that laptop to the newer one that I still have.
What I have done so far
I have managed - after many trials and tribulations with network settings, firewalls, etc - to get the two computers on the same network and seeing each other. I have shared the C:\ drive on the laptop and on the desktop as well.
The problem
On either computer, I can navigate through the folders just fine. However, when I try to copy files from the laptop to the desktop using the desktop, I get an error message for around 95% of files telling me "Destination Folder Access Denied." Oddly, when I go to the laptop and use that to copy the files from it to the desktop, I have no problem.
Possible solutions that I have tried
If anyone knows how to solve this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Possible solutions that I have tried
- The firewalls on both computers are completely off.
All shared folders have been set to allow network users to change files (XP) or permissions given to everyone (Vista).
I have tried to make sure that all security settings that might interfere are off
