trouble installing wireless network card

I just purchased a Linksys wireless network system for the house I'm currently living in. The main computer of the house is connected to the Router (cable modem) and the only other link is my laptop.
It's an IBM Thinkpad 570e running Win 98se.

The problem is that the laptop keeps throwing up the error message "10038:Socket operation on non-socket." The wireless adapter (Linksys wpc54gs) is working great (both lights lit up) and the device is shown in the device manager as working properly. However, the Linksys utility (WLAM) will not open--it throws up the previously mentioned error message.

I've looked around the internet and found a couple other people with the exact same problem, but there are not real answers attached to those postings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated before my time is up to return all this network stuff.
