Trouble installing windows

ok we just set up a new comp in the lab at school an P3 866 new 80gig WD HD 256 ram... today i went to install win Xp on it and it was having troubles. I boot from the CD and it loads all that stuff and then said "windows is now starting" and just sits there forever. tried this 3 times with XP and got the same thing. so then I tried 2K and the same thing happened

I then reverted to 98SE and i got it to format the drive and start installing. but when it got to the part where it loads plug & play drivers it just freezes i restart it get back to there and freezes again

im pretty pissed at this now. i can only guess that?s its the memory. but i don?t have any ram to swap it with. i plan on running memtest on it later.

we have a voodoo3 in there and it gets very warm to the touch. hot almost but its only got passive cooling. it also could be a problem

Im wondering if there is anything else that could be causing this. its a brand new PS and HD so i don?t think they are bad.

Try running setup from a command prompt with the /checkupgradeonly switch to see if you have hardware compatibility issues.

ill try that but i dont think there should be any because this exact setup with a diff HD was running win 2k in the past before it was dismantled and then rebuilt

I'll try to help a little. I've run a Voodoo board before. It ran a little hot but it's never been hot enough to remove my finger prints though. The only real problem I had was the chip set would not let me play Unreal. When I've had problems with memory, the system would not boot at all, due to wrong memory for the system or dead memory. Or the system running very slow due to not enough memory.

If the only thing you are runing different is the HD and you can't get any OS to load properly, you going to have to either break the rig down and test each component seperately or put the HD in another system and load your OS on it. Then put it back in the rig, and see if you still have a problem.

Good luck.

Voodoo 3, 4 and 5 video cards run Unreal, Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament great. Make sure you use Glide rendering.

i have the same problem, i dun know why this happens, i think its my harddrive becuase its old but your problem might be different

Anubis,

Temporarily put a different video card in the machine. Install WinXP. Put the intended video card in the machine.

There's an excellent chance that will work.
