trouble installing Win2k/XP, software

I was trying to install Windows 2000 and Windows XP on my friend's computer over the past weekend and kept running into "Cannot copy xxx.xxx files" I thought there was something wrong with my CDs so I tried a couple of other CDs and also ran into the same problem, just at another file. I retried installing the files but wasn't successul. Windows 98 seemed to be like the only OS that would install. I was finally able to install Windows 2000 on Saturday but now there's another problem. When I downloaded programs onto his computer and try to install it, I keep getting this I/O error. He said that it works after he tries a couple of times but it's kind of annoying. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if this had anything to do with it but he recently purchased a Radeon 9200 and 512MB of Corsair DDR RAM from Newegg. The RAM installed fine but when he tried installing drivers for the video card, that's when his computer got messed up. After he rebooted, he got an error saying a file was missing and I haven't been able to cleanly install an OS afterward.

Thanks JonnyBlaze. I kinda thought it was bad RAM too. I tried swapping out the hardware that was replaced (128MB PC133 SDRAM, ATI Rage 128) but still encountered the same problem while installing. The time I got it to work was with the old RAM. I Ghosted it and set up the new hardware and now it's having problems again. Maybe I'll have to return it back to Newegg for an exchange. Any other suggestions?
