I received my Radeon 9700 Pro today. I took out my Ti500 and deleted the nVidia drivers from the Control Panel...then shut down and stuck the 9700 Pro in the AGP slot.

Now what happens is, WinXP will boot to the desktop but I cannot install the card! It doesn't get recognized as a "Display Device", it gets recognized as "Other Hardware" and has the yellow exclamation point. What also funny (to me) is that it gets recognized twice for some reason; there is always a double entry for the card.

Anyway, I skipped the "New Hardware Found" wizard and was going to try to install the Catalyst drivers. The installation starts, but then I get an error that installation could not be finished and that I need to set my card as a Standard VGA display adapter. But I can't do that because the card isn't showing up as a standard display adapter! Everytime I delete it from "Other Hardware" in Device Manager, it shows right back up after the next bootup.

Anyone else had this problem? I have a Soyo Dragon KT266 board BTW. Asus P4PE is on the way, but I figured I'd try the Radeon out on this board first. It should work, right?

well, open it up, in the other hardware, and select (update driver) then try doing the standard vga adapter, or see if you can get inf files from your vid drivers. Thats about all i can think of. Just see if you can do this.

That's the problem...when I go to update driver, I can't select Standard VGA Adapter. It only lets me choose from ATI drivers...I can't get it to let me choose a generic driver at all. I just now set it up in Win98 and I didn't have a problem, so it must be something to do with WinXP trying to be smart and userfriendly (blah).

But like I said, after I choose Update Driver, I can't get it to let me choose a Standard VGA Adapter. Can anyone give me the name of the .inf that WinXP uses for Standard VGA Adapter? I tried pulling it from my Win98 Inf directory but of course it wouldn't use it since that driver is for Win98.

Well. . .

Make sure that you are selecting to pick the file location, or pick hardware, not just want windows wants itself to find. Select a find hardware wizard, then go through it, but when it finds stuff, don't hit them, but rather do the pick from list, and pick video adapter etc. . .then it should work fine. If this is a computer that you do not use right now, you may wish to reformat it and test some things out by re installing windows with the card in and see what it finds.

I also had that "issue" although a few pl pointed out to me that it is the 2 ramdacs being recognized as two seperate cards... Not an issues, its just WinXP not knowing whats its dealing with.

Maybe if you lowered your resolution to 640 x 480 it would let you choose standard vga.

try booting the system to safe mode then installing the drivers, safe mode automatically loads the standard pci video drivers by default, and should fix your problem, had to do this when changing catalyst drivers on my machine once.
