Trouble installing Microsoft Security Essentials

Hey guys,

I was working on a friends computer for them, disabling startup programs, and services on an older Athlon xp system, since they only have 512mb ram...(they are going to buy 2gb for it) and I noticed the system had the stupid hp driver error (access denied using msconfig) So I fixed that, and then, I removed the expired norton 2010, and fixed a few other things, anyways...

Its running XP SP3, and and when I went to install the mseinstall.exe I got the "this application isn't a valid win32 application" error

But, I can run other executable files...

Malware bytes picked up a few vundo, and other spyware on system, nothing to major...

Anyone got an idea? Right now I feel it may be spyware related, and wondering what fix I can work... Though it is possible that it is update related... Win update showed around 20 updates, so I left the system running those and will be going back there in a week or two when the ram arrives from newegg.

Thanks.

Try changing the name of the file. I have had some some malware block exe by name, so instead of mse.exe change to abc.exe for example.
