Ok my PC is a Core2duo E6400 in a Foxconn P9657AA motherboard, with 2x512mb kingston valueram pc2-5300. I have a Western Digital 320GB SATA 3.0 gb/s hard drive. Now, this motherboard has been a little bit of a pain in the butt here and there, but I just couldn't afford to spend another 100-150 dollars to get one of the really popular boards at the time I built this PC in December. The foxconn was a steal at ~$100.
I tried to install linux, specifically Mandriva, and it did not get very far at all. The dvd booted and everything but before I got to specific partitioning options I got an error saying:
I restarted and tried again and got the same exact thing. I then attached an old WD 30gb IDE hard drive that I had lying around to the motherboard, and installed Mandriva on there without a problem. So I suspect that either my hard drive, or perhaps the motherboard sata connector or something like that, is confusing linux.
Then I also recently installed virtualbox, and have had great results with running windows xp virtual boxes, but nothing else seems to work!
I tried to install win2k pro on one, and it works fine up until the regional settings part, where you tell it the computers name and what time zone you are in and what your keyboard is.... when I get to this part and enter my data, and click next, it seems to be ok, but then it loads for a second and brings up the same exact screen again. so i type in the info again, and it does the same damn thing, i went through this screen 5 or 6 times before I gave up!! Then I tried again the next day, same thing.
I made another virtual pc and tried to install ubuntu... when i try to write the partitions it says I/O error and it cannot write the swap partition. so I tried debian, and SAME error! Please note that with each of these cases, I had made a totally new virtual PC, and a new fixed size virtual hard disk. I tried allocating them 256mb of ram at first, then 512, same results. For the windows vpc, I picked win2k for the operating system type. For the two Linux vpcs, I picked Linux 2.6 each time.
Does anyone know what the hell is going on with my computer???
