my sister want's to install an 84"Lx8"Dx4"H floating mantle asymmetrically over a gas fireplace. The mantle weighs ~15lbs and is made from something like plywood.
crude diagram:
---------------------maybe a stud
..|maybe a left stud.........|........|right stud
..........|fireplace.......|
.....|brick/drywall.............|
...|mantle.......................................|
originally there was brick surrounding the fireplace going most of the way up the wall, but my sister didn't like how it looked, so drywall was installed (supported by a wooden frame) to hide most of it.
*maybe a stud - could just be part of the wood framing used
a picture before the drywall was placed over it
the screws are ~1" longer than the drywall/frame so they would be able to anchor into the brick, but we don't have the tools to do this atm
she doesn't want to shift it anymore left as it won't look as good.
as such, we have 1 (maybe 2) useable studs
supposedly, nothing is actually going to be put on the mantle
i doubt it would be stable enough based on the off center wall stud
is there anyway to do this without anchoring it into the brick/drywall combo?
