Anyone know if you can re-run the widescreen mod for a different resolution, or do you need to reinstall the whole game? I picked the wrong resolution for mine, and while it doesn't look bad, it's too small.

My problem with BG1 was not the story, nor the graphics, nor the gameplay, it was that I got stuck, literally.

It's been several months so my description might not be totally accurate, but I was at the tower (SE part of the map) and going to down the levels and came to the area where a knight/fighter/whatever was in bed in a deep sleep surrounded by 4 guards (tough, tough guys). In the next room there is a stairwell leading down to the next level, however, I can't find the key to open a door at the stairwell. The sleeping knight has a footlocker next to his bed, but I get attacked everytime I try to open it and the guards kill me pretty easily. Even then, I don't know if the key is in that footlocker. I didn't want to have to go all the way back up, travel around to get my characters stronger and then try again to kill the guards, so I gave up.

Ha! That chest had some extra loot only :) You needed a key that was hidden somewhere else in the dungeon and you didn't have to fight much to get it :) Man - TotSC, such a great expansion :D

Run the mod's .exe again and choose a different resolution. No need to reinstall anything.

Sweet, I have it in a better resolution now and am running it windowed in ddraw with D3dWindower.

Now I just need a class (using BGT) for BG1 that doesn't un-balance the game.

I always enjoyed a pure Fighter :) For solo'ing the whole of BGT, I usually use a Druid Shapeshifter (the "werewolf", with Weimer's fixes too) or a F/T/M - those plow through the low stuff fast and with extra mods (like Tactics) actually allow you to survive those random encounters in Amn :p

Also, SCS is a great mod to make the game more challenging. It gives a boost to every enemy of a particular type (mages, thieves etc), so the game is hard the whole time.

I'm not sure if Weimer's shapeshifter fixes are in there, I am guessing they are though. I debated a sorceror, just to punish myself. I almost always play a melee guy so playing as a sorceror would be stupid hard for me.

EDIT: Wait, is a shapeshifter worth using if NOT soloing?

Worth is a matter of personal taste :p I always enjoy having one or more in my group.

Do you mean if you play as a shapeshifter you would also bring Cernd? (I think he was a shifter also). By worth it I meant from a pure useability viewpoint. Like how powerful they are compared to other classes.

A vanilla shapeshifter is broken (has a lot of bugs) and is very weak. A post-Weimer one is a true werewolf. Yes, I would bring Cernd with me as a second werewolf. He can rip through pretty much anything. But it really depends on my game... Almost everyone is useful.

Sometimes I made games where my team was a "werewolf pack" :) I edited the classes of each member to be a shapeshifter druid :p

I loved BG1. Minsc (and Boo) is one of my all time favorite NPCs. That dude is just messed up.

Apparently I don't have Weimer's fixes but I have something similar called 'Refinements' installed. I'll give it a try.

Personally, if you want a class that doesn't unbalance the game, try something non-standard, like a bard or a thief (i find that a lot of the "standard" classes I know of and play are pretty OP, but that's how I like it). My favorite classes come and go, but if I had to pick one I'd pick something with thief - either pure assassin, or F/T or M/T (for backstab power and invis, respectively). I like to play with a little cheese, though, with boots of speed and lots of potions of invis when there's no corner to run around and hide. backstabbing is probably my favorite tactic, and running with a solo FMT was just oodles of fun.

I've also heard good things about Blades, with their spin abilities, but I've never played one. I think Haer'dalis might be a better Blade, though, with his illegal specialization in swords :p.

Ew, I just refreshed myself on shapeshifters. You can't wear armor and you can only change into a werewolf like what, once a day? That is, until you get higher level. Does that sound correct? If so, how exactly do you use that one shapeshift the most effectively?

- you get one shapeshift per day every 3 levels (1 at lvl1). And you can turn into a greater werewolf once a day at lvl13.
- a werewolf has a good base AC (I think it's 0), a greater werewolf has an insane AC (-10 or something)
- you can sitll wear all the other stuff, just not an armor - you're usually shapeshifted anyway, so it's not really a problem
- I let others do the talking :)

Weimer's fix changes shapeshifting completely. You are given a "weapon", a paw in this case that when placed in your weapon slot changes you into a werewolf. Hence you can shapeshift as many times as you wish, just by changing the weapon. The thing is - you can still talk to people when shapeshifted, so there's really no reason to run around as a human. What other things does Weimer's fix do?
- you get a proper number of attacks per round
- you get a proper resistance to elements and magic
- your paws are actually magical weapons
- you get resistance to normal weapons as all werewolves should
- greater werewolf gets hp regen
- dispel doesn't break your paws (they just disappear and you fight with your "fists" in vanilla)
- other fixes

Makes the shapeshifter really cool :)

Ah, okay. I might be screwed with this refinements mod. I'll have to read the readme and see what it does.

EDIT: Ohh, I get it now. You actually stay as a werewolf until you toggle back to human. You can neither talk nor cast spells. I rolled up a crappy character just to test this out, when I shifted I had an AC of 1. It was 8 previously. When I shifted I saw the two paw weapons also, so that was reassuring. So, with this refinements mod, I cannot talk as a werewolf and my paws can be dispelled. I might have to either try to replace it with Weimer's fixes which would probably bork my mod install, or forget about BGT and use Tutu.

I'm pretty sure Weimer's fixes will work fine with BGT (as I always run BGT). Just remove the Refinements and install Weimer (update it to the newest Weidu first). Or play another class :p A multi-class is also a lot of fun. Either a F/T or a T/M or F/T/M. The last one is best to solo though as you'll level up really slow with a group.

As much as the idea of a single super-powerful character appeals to me, I think half the fun is the companions. Besides, I'm running a tactical mod setup, so the added difficulty would have me pulling my hair out running solo and re-loading over and over again.

I'll try posting over at the refinement mod forums and I'll see if the info I have is still current.

Ohh definitely! Jan Jansen imo is the best character to keep for party banters. He has some amazing chats with Korgan, Viconia, Minsc and pretty much anyone else :D I am always laughing my ass off when he's around! Hell, I wish you could keep everybody to not miss a single conversation... that's not possible :(

Yeah, the one time I beat BG2 after it came out years ago I never forgot the awesome banter. I posted my question about shapeshifters over at the refinement forum. I don't know whether to wait for a reply or try another build.

Those of you that have/are playing BG. Is it possible to remap the screen scrolling arrow keys to the WASD keys? This is bugging the shit out of me! I'm use to having my left hand on the left side of the keyboard for the hotkeys and I hate having to move the mouse to the edge of the screen and back.

I've never been able to do that, but you might be able to get away with a script in autohotkey for example that remaps your wasd keys to arrow keys just while you play.

Go into the config program. You can remap most of the keys but I'm not sure about the arrow keys.
I never had a problem with it. I just double clicked and thats where the screen centered. If I wanted to move guys all over the map, I would open up the map and tell them where to go.
