Trouble enabling surround sound

I've got a pretty strange problem with my surround sound. The surround sound in Aibt Audio HQ works fine when testing the speaker configuration, but winamp, windows media player etc only play sounds in the front speakers. I've checked under "Sounds and audio devices" and 5.1 is enabled. What should I do?

See if theres an option to enable virtual surround as the programs u mentioned are most probably only sending stereo sound. For example in my Audigy panel i can enable CMSS 3D for upmixing stereo to surround.

I know in winamp with my onboard 5.1 I needed to enable hardware acceleration in the main output plugin under preferences to get sound out of my other channels.
