trouble connecting Xbox360 to PC over LAN

I'm trying to connect my 360 to my PC over Ethernet and sharing my internet over that network.

When I plug the cable into the xbox and into the PC, the xbox can't connect to the PC or the internet. On my PC I can see the xbox as a media device, but under network and sharing center my LAN connection just says "unidentified network".

I use a USB 3G dongle for my internet so I can't make a bridge connection.

I've done this. I used an USB NIC and USB 3G wireless card. Made a VM of ubuntu and had it do the routing between the two.

I could never get internet sharing in Windows to work... :\

I tried helping a buddy get his Xbox connected to his PC and gave up in frustration. Oddly enough, my PS3 was extremely easy to set up... wtg Microsoft.
