Trouble connecting to network at apartment complex

I move into my new apartment last week to find out my network access in my room is not working. For now i am on my room mate's wireless. I sent in a request and the tech that came to fix it just elft a note telling me to run ipconfig. The only problem i see from this is that my LAN connection does not have a default gateway. I can release the IP but when i try to renew i run into problems. Anyone have some possible solutions?

What IP address do you get when you are connected to the apartment's network?
What problems are you having when you use IPCONFIG /RENEW?

We werent given any instructions to connect. My room mats plugged their computers in and they worked fine. Of course, they have been living in the dorms for a year so there may be some setting that i am missing. The ip address i get goes as follows:

Autoconfiguration IP Address...: 169.254.215.186
Subnet Mask..........................: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway is blank.

you are getting the "Default Address" from windows, meaning you did not get a DHCP address.

running ipconfig /renew will cause your adapter to start the dhcpdiscover process and (hopefully) get an IP address.

Not sure, but what COULD have happened: Some switches (cisco's do this) will put a port in a blocking state for a few seconds while they listen to the traffic to make sure that there will not be a loop in the network (this is all spanning tree stuff). If it's blocking traffic and doesn't unblock before windows gives up, then you get your 169 address from windows.

I have problems with portfast and PXE, but I haven't with windows. I would just try the ipconfig /renew and see if it works.

They came back in fixed it. It turns out that each unit is on a shared cable modem connection. He just reset the switch and modem and it worked.
