Trouble cloning data from old HD after installing SSD

I just installed a Samsung 840 SSD in my 2011 Macbook Pro to replace the 750GB SATA drive. I have the SATA drive in a USB enclosure but it's not being detected properly.

When I reboot and try to get the boot menu to boot off the old drive I get nothing and it eventually tries to do an Internet Recovery. Disk Utility sees the drive and shows a single 750GB partition but it's not mounted and when I try to mount it nothing happens. I can't do any kind of verification or recovery on the partition because it isn't mounted.

Everything worked fine using the SATA drive before I did the drive replacement so I'm not sure why I can't mount the partition for it now.

Anyone have any ideas?

Put the original drive back in, stick the SSD in the enclosure and clone it that way?
