morale has been low for quite some time--even before the previous Iraq war.

good morale only comes from a leadership that inspires. empty rhetoric only lasts so long for inspiration.

For anyone who doesn't believe that the troops morale is in question you should sit down and talk to several vets who've served in conflict away from any chain of command presence. You might be surprised at what you'll hear from them. When the troops become demoralized they become less effective and more prone to being injured or worse while in the combat zone. A prime example of this would be the soviet army while it was in Afghanistan and getting it's butt kicked by a bunch of rag tag old men resisting them.

I agree with the we need a civil war. Let one side when, than build the country.

No we don't. Here's an alternative plan:

We could just identify all the people on earth who think like you do and kill all of them. There would be so many fewer people there'd be no need to fight and the the most useless portion of humanity would be dead. Now that would be win win.

What kind of an emotionally dead prick does it take to look at people like things that need to be wiped away. You are one sick son of a bitch.

Yes, but then you'd have an infinite loop, because you'd always have to kill the people that killed off the poeple that think like that. The snake would eat it's tail.

Yes, that was the point.

This may be one of the reasons:

Rumsfeld extends tours of 3,500 US troops in Iraq 1 hour, 4 minutes ago, thursday, July 27, 2006

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Pentagon extended the tours of about 3,500 US troops in Iraq for 120 days in a move that dashed hopes of a reduction in the US force this year in the face of surging sectarian violence.

The Pentagon also identified four other brigades with 25,000 troops for deployment to Iraq late this year and early next, enough to maintain the US force at about 130,000 troops for a year.

"Additionally, the secretary of defense approved a request by the commander of Multi-National Forces-Iraq (MNF-I) to extend the deployment of the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team operating in Iraq for up to 120 additional days," it said.

The move indicated that US commanders have effectively given up hopes for even a gradual reduction in the US force this year on account of a bitter insurgency and spiralling sectarian violence.

The Alaska-based 172nd Stryker Brigade already had begun rotating out of Iraq when the order came to stay put.

Army officials said decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis on troops in a battalion that was in the process of redeploying.

"They're still trying to get as many soldiers as possible," said an army official. "It looks like it will be 3,500."

A Pentagon spokesman initially said about 4,000 troops were affected.

The Pentagon's policy is to keep troops in Iraqi for no more than 365 days at a time, but in the past commanders have kept some troops longer during crucial junctures such as during a Shiite uprising in 2004.

"If you extend somebody, is there some disappointment that they won't be home when they thought they would be home? Sure," US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters. "But as I say this is a professional military, and they are doing a superb job."

He said when an army unit was extended for several months two years ago, "they handled it in a professional way, and got on with life."

I had a weird nightmare last night woke up in sweats and all. I was in Iraq suited up, infantry battalion - whole nine. Dreamed from recuitment until deployed in Iraq. I'm a bit old mid thirties but the guys were amazed by my shape nevertheless, anyway we were doing routine patrol with three hummers and I was driving the one in the middle of this convoy and mine was hit with an IED. Launched truck end over end because it hit a little late blew back end off. The two guys wth me were screaming shredded up pretty bad. I was medic so I went to go to work on them only to reach out without any hands attached to my arms looked doen legs were gone at the knees too, looked in the rear view mirror face was pretty as ever luckily anyway I woke up right about then. I've never even set foot in a war zone and I may be suffering PTST!!! I think about these guys all the time and what a nightmare it must be..

That was the status of that sovereign nation before we invaded it to destroy the WMD/Delivery systems and the exigent circumstance of their being used in 45 days. So you'd advocate that Bush and anyone who'd invade a nation like Iraq has a screw loose if they did so to obviate on side killing the other within the same country.. there gotta be a winner... the superior people should win out and folks like the US should hush up and go home after we insured the WMD etc were destroyed..

I can't speak to Iraq but can a bit to that other fiasco that got started based on a lie...
I think fear is what grips many. You know they are there and they are trying to kill you.... You know that at any second you may be dead and you may even think about what it will feel like ... will you hear the round hitting you? Folks learned the tell tale noise various munitions made before detonation... and that noise creates an adrenalin rush like no other, I'm told. So I wonder about what folks in Iraq are really thinking as they ride around in their trucks ... are they in a state of fear or has the the minds simply given up... no more adrenalin at the sight of potential enemy children walking by... not even caring about anything more than going to sleep. Do they talk slow... tiredly full of fatigue.. yes.. I'd think so.. heat saps the energy rather fast... reflexes are dulled... and then a noise... you've heard that noise before and you pull the trigger... and keep pulling it.. and before you is a baker and strewn all around are the loaves of bread he was carrying to the market.... and now you are in jail.. alive but now the next patrol has another fear to deal with... and it begins again.. but your nightmare has just begun...

Another possible reason?

Four US Marines killed in Iraq's Anbar province 1 hour, 19 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Four U.S. Marines have been killed in action in Iraq's restive western Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

It said the Marines -- three from the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division and the other from Regional Combat Team 5 -- were killed on Thursday. Statements on their deaths gave no further details.

More than 2,570 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq [/U]since the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein.
