I liked Legacy. The plot wasn't always there, but I didn't care. I loved the 80's and seeing the old graphics from the original recreated in Legacy with the brilliant set design and mind blowing sound track created an imaginative world that came alive. The Cycle battle is thrilling. And that Daft Punk score! The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way, besides the ho-hum passable story, was cgi Jeff Bridges. He looked... weird. They should have got the artists that did the recent fast and furious face cgi work on that.

But on a semi-related note, what needs a sequel MUCH more than Tron Legacy is Tron: Uprising! Oh my god! That has to be one of the top ten animated shows I've ever seen, sporting quality writing and story telling the Tron Movies could only dream of. Gut wrenching that Disney dropped the axe on a cliff hanger like they did, but perhaps not unexpected given the more grown up themes on display in the cartoon.

I actually really enjoyed Legacy. Surprised it took them this long to get the next one going.

It is short compared to the gap between Tron and Tron 2.

Tron 1 freaking blows me away. Prior to Tron there was almost NO CGI in movies, it was very rarely done and never at that scale. Then because Tron wasn't a success initially (and had a HUGE backlash in Hollywood about the effects) we don't see anyone try to do anything like that until Jurassic Park a decade later. The fact that Tron wasn't allowed to win the Special Effects Oscar back then was a travesty, every modern action movie copies what Tron did.

I often think if Tron would have been successful how things would have been different. Maybe then Disney does John Lasseter's version of the Brave Little Toaster in the early 80's. He was playing with mixing 2D animation with 3D background with awesome results:

But because Tron flopped this experimentation got him fired. And that is cool his firing lead to Pixar/Toy Story, but jeez if we would have had CGI movies in the 80's the tech would be so much further along now. CGI animation during the 80's was basically Steve Job's hobby, it was kinda a lost decade.

I think Tron: Legacy did double its budget, but its budget was over $100 million -- global gross of ~$300M? Good, but not spectacular. Wonder if they'll lower the budget this time around.

i thought the last one was a reboot and not a sequel?

Clearly, you didn't see it.

I enjoyed Legacy. I thought the story was a bit wonky and had a few character that came out of nowhere and left just as quickly (the guy that played Scarecrow in Batman Begins, for example), but it was still good.

I remember seeing the first in Honolulu when was in the corp.

I did like the second one also, might have to watch that again.

Interesting to see what they do with a third.

Allow me to be the first douche to say that Legacy kinda sucked. The original was great because of its groundbreaking visuals and premise, but the sequel was nothing but special effects with some babe thrown in.

FUCK! Did we REALLY need another Alice In Wonderland and Beauty and The Beast? That was why it was shelved? To make room for this shit? Holy hell Disney, you kill off Tron Uprising before it's arc can even finish and now this. Way to kick your fans while they're down. To think Star Wars now rests in their grubby hands.

You aren't alone. As a big fan of the original, I was super let down by the new one. It was boring and simply didn't stand out in todays CGI driven world. That being said, the fact they shelved it still sucks.

Disney has always been a bit borked that way in reality.

Why Tolkein specifically put it in his will that they would never be allowed near LOTR.

just need to find a way to incorporate it into the MCU, then we'd get at least another trilogy by 2018, let alone just one film

It's been cancelled.....

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/How-Tron-3-Fans-Trying-Rescue-Disney-Cancelled-Sequel-71782.html

could be because of the lackluster performance of Tomorrowland. While that doesn't seem much like Tron it does deal with a person who is transported from the "real" world to another reality. Only in Tomorrowland it's a future instead of into a computer reality.

Tomorrowland under-performed Disney's expectations as did Legacy of Tron. I think that people at Disney expected that movie to get closer to 1 billion than it did.

Legacy of Tron?

Yeah, I saw this the other day. Have to say I am kind of disappointed as I wanted to see the next instalment. Maybe Disney will get to the point where all they make is Pixar and Star Wars movies.
