Trojans

I noticed a weird entry in the "Tools" menu (4th entry "Rebirding of lockless) of IE 6.0 Screenshot here in Anandtech Folder. I tried to run a virus scan, it ran for +- 30 seconds and then shut down. I ran a scan on Trend Micro and it found TROJ_711.SVR-1 and TROJ_WINATAD.SVR. A search of Symantec (I use Nortons) turned up nothing. A search of Google returned hits only from Trend Micro. Anyone recognize this and know why a search of Symantec shows nothing? I think I know where it came from but for now, my son-in-law (A. Curry) will remain nameless. 🙂

An anti-virus program is used to detect viruses, it may have limited capability to detect trojans, but its not their stongpoint. Programs such as Tauscan , or The Cleaner are specifically made to detect trojans. Here is another real good trojan detection program. Thier web sites should give you some insight to your little visitor...... hth

In the meanwhile, put up a firewall like Zonealarm. You can stop the trojan from contacting the net, if it wasnt removed.

Another vote for using ZA. Syquest will do it too. Then they will tell you exactly which file is calling out. Usually once you know which file is the offender, you can then figure out what put it there. It is amazing how much commercial software installs some sort of trojan these days. You might find it has something to do with an app you installed yourself.

Got the trojan out, thrashed windows update (trojan was here) doing it though. I guess I'll have to reinstall it. Also running a firewall now. The item in my toolbar

<< Screenshot here in Anandtech Folder. >>

is still there. It must be a seperate problem. Thanks for the help.

Another question:
Is there a program I can use to scan for trojans after I dl a file? I usually right click and scan with the av software but I didn't realize that it dosen't check for trojans. TIA

My bad, I should have been more specific. I installed it under my XP partition and was looking for one to run under my 98SE partition.
