Trojanized iWork 09 on BitTorrent

No no no, the mac does not get viruses so its ok to DL pirated software. Yeesh you people don't know anything, haha. Yeah I agree with above poster pirating stuff is never a good idea. I can imagine though that work around programs are harder to come by with a mac though, almost anything you need to do on a PC you can find shareware or freeware to use.

There actually is quite a lot of shareware/freeware for OS X.. but there's a lot less of it, so you don't have as much of a variety. I have found software to do everything I have needed. Most I haven't had to pay for, but stuff that's really good.. I donate to/buy.

But it is these people who think that they can't get infected in anyway by using a Mac, so they just download like crazy. There are still security vulnerabilities that allow people to gain access to your computer, which is definitely not a good thing on any platform.
 
The age of care-free Mac computing, IMO, is gradually ending. That is to say, though, that Macs are still a lot safer than PCs--if you don't do anything stupid. 😉

I've found that Mac shareware, though limited, is much higher quality than the Windows equivalents in a lot of cases.

Technically speaking, Mac's don't get Viruses (at least not currently IIRC), they can however get Trojans (such as in the OP).

And what, may I ask, do you mean by 'Yeesh you people don't know anything, haha.'?

That I cannot speak to. I know that on quite a few tracker websites there is almost always a comment that a file contains a virus. However, on quite a few Slashdot stories there is a comment "First".

Also, this was a trojan, not a virus.

A trojan is something that sneaks in and then opens the door so other things can do naughty.

A virus is a self replicating malevolent program that does naughty on its own.

im basically using malware and viruses interchangeably, as most dont know the difference. Either way... no one is safe from their own stupidity.

I agree. If you're going to use applications like those contained within iWork 09, buy them. Or use a free alternative like OpenOffice.

The irony is that you can download the iWork '09 trial from Apple's site (and very fast servers 20MB/s!!) and plug in a pirate S/N.

About 5,000 people infected with another Trojan courtesy of Adobe Photoshop CS4. Just because you're on a Mac doesn't mean you're safe...don't pirate software! 😀
 
If people want a free office suite so badly, why not just download OpenOffice.

Macs don't get viruses because they tend to fly under the radar of malware providers. Malware is no longer just script kiddies trying to vandalize for some perverted form of glory. It's all about money. Programs are written to affect the most amount of systems, which is usually Windows. Unfortunately, the increasing popularity of Mac is a double edged sword. No computer can claim to be 100% secure unless it's not connected to the Internet and you don't put any disks or flash media into it. That said, Macs are probably more secure than Windows machines, at least where XP is concerned.

Because compared to Office and iWork OpenOffice is a joke?

With Office you have compatibility and more features than you can shake a stick at.
With iWork you have incredible layout features, the best presentation software around, and a very easy to use spreadsheet program.

What does OpenOffice give me besides slowness, bugs, and a non-existent price tag?
