Tripods??

Planning to get a tripod for my canon ae-1 and was wondering what to look for in a tripod and any recommendations? Also, will the quick release plate scratch the bottom of the camera?

thanks

EDIT: the lens is a 70-210mm, so its pretty big

All i know is that make sure you shop around, you take a look at them and try them out. When it comes to price photographers always say that you should get something that is not cheap and that will last for years and years to come, some say you should spend as much as the price of your camera.. 500$ or more.

the plate usially has some sort of paddint on itm some are cork some are a rubbery type material

and a good tripod is expensive,

there are a bunch of different kinds for different uses, there are huge ones for big heavy cameras and tiny light ones peopel go hikeing with,

spend more then 200$ and get a bogen with a pan/tilt head

1. No the quick release plate will not scratch the camera.

Factors that make a good tripod:
1. Stability
2. Weight
3. Flexibility of movements... the best ones have a ball-head, so with one control you have all degrees of freedom.

Check out Bogen Tripods...

Also i forgot to mention, most people buy the Tripod and the Head Seperatly. I seen Heads go up like 300 dollars alone.

bumping this thread, but does the tripod matter for relatively casual use? I'm building a setup to take pictures of ebay goods and was going to get a tripod for my camera. does it matter (in my situation) what kind i get?

weight, stability, and fluid motion in the head. The type of head will change the cost, but for most ppl, this does not matter, since most consumers know nothing about heads (same for me for the most part).

I need a new tripod too.

Not really, assuming you're shooting indoors. Personally, I have a SunPak 7500 Pro Platinum Plus - was $100 at Best Buy a couple years ago. (or there abouts) This tripod is pretty decent, though, I haven't messed with many. Bogen was way out of my price range to even consider my uses and needs. I am the casual shooter that wanted something with a little weight so it is stable in moderate winds. Controlling this unit is pretty easy, too.

For a simple but quality setup, get Bogen 3001 legs w/ a 482RC head. Should run you under $150 new, watch ebay though and you could score something similar for under $100

I've got a SLIK carbon fiber which weighs @2.5lbs. I can take it on hikes and long walks with little trouble. It was around $240 (not including the head) which is cheap for a carbon fiber tripod. However, if you don't need portability, then just get a metal tripod. You should be able to find something decent for ~$100
