It has Mac OS X version 10.3.7 on an 18gb HD, Mac OS X version 10.1.5 on a 40gb HD, and Mac OS 9.2.1 on an 18gb HD.

I would have put 10.3.7 on the 40gb, but, here is the thing. I already had Panther installed on the 18gb HD, and the 40gb was just being used as a backup. Also, the 40gb has 2 bad blocks. I just decided to put 10.1 on the 40gb just in case I need it. I am mostly on Panther or OS 9 anyways. 10.1 may come in handy some day. I am also planning on installing Tiger on my G4, but I am not sure how well it would work with the stock AGP video card.

I didn't over do it, did I? :)

EDIT: I think the 40gb may be dying. When I type in a web address, it will take some time to load the page. It will do this sometimes. I can hear the drive having to spin up before it loads the page. Takes a little over 10 seconds to do this. Also, there is an occasional loud click sound. On the other drives and OS's, this problem does not occur. Is the drive dying?

That does rather sound like a dying drive. You might well want to take a look, either with a manufacturer's bootable diagnostic disk, or in the system log. Disks can last a fair while sounding like that, or they can die within hours. Best of luck.

I do own Alsoft's Diskwarrior, so I may run that to see if there is anything going on. I will do this as soon as I am back from work, and I will let you know what happens. :)

Thanks!

Why 10.1? Do you even use it?

If you ever do need 10.1, you can just install it then. Personally, I wouldn't recommend anyone run anything less than 10.2 if possible.

As for the disk, it does sound like it may be dying. In my limited experience the drives that I've had that got bad blocks sequestered by the manufacturer's diagnostic disks, eventually end up dying anyway, within a year or so (or sometimes quicker).

Thus nowadays, if I get that, I just scrap the drive. I can't be bothered to deal with the headache.

I just ran DiskWarrior on the 40gb drive, and it shows that the drive is fine. I rebuilt the directory, and did a test on the drive to see if it was failing, and there was nothing wrong. Hmm...

As for why I chose 10.1, I like using it. I prefer the look of 10.1 over Panther. I bought 10.1 long ago. I never tried 10.2, but I may purchase it so I can try it out.

It will work just fine.

From what everyone says: Speed of 10.4 > 10.3 > 10.2 > 10.1.

Even if you can't make use of the GPU speedup of 10.4 Tiger, at worst it won't be any slower than 10.3.

That's good to know. :) I am looking forward to Tiger!

Anyways, I am having a problem with 10.1 right now. I just booted into 10.1 right now, and the resolution is at 800x600. My monitor is only a 15'' at the moment, and the resolution is terrible. I want to switch it to 1024x768 but there is something that is stopping me. Everytime I click Displays in the System Preferences, it unexpectedly quits, every single time. I can't change the resolution. Any idea what is going on?
