I'm 19 right now live in the US never been out of the US, currently going to college in the same state I've lived most my life. Anyways I have a friend who has grandparents in Holland and he invited me and another friend of ours to go over their with him for up to a month. Now the problem is even though I'd be getting free stay over their flight tickets are not cheap I assume $1000-$1200 round trip(plus whatever i spend over there). So I have the money and wouldn't be broke because of it, but that's still a lot of money to spend.

However I have a feeling I might regret not going and think it'd be fun and a good experience.

Anyhow comments and a poll :)

Yes. Trips to foreign countries are a good experience, and I'm sorry I didn't figure it out sooner.

Staying with someone's family over there seems like a neat experience to which you wouldn't always have access. I'm in no position to advise you on finances, though.

Go, seriously. If I had the chance to, I'd be all over it. I've wanted to go backpacking around Europe for years. Don't pass this up.

depends on where you're going but yeah, plane tickets will be at least $750-$850. i'd definitely go if you'll be alright on cash when you get back.

i personally wouldn't, but thats because i've got to save all through college for a move to England after I graduate ;)

I went abroad last fall semester to France, and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life thus far, so I definitely recommend visiting europe if at all possible.

If anything, just going to be around different cultures is well worth it (albeit, most of europe is more or less the same as America in terms of the bedrock beliefs, but still...)

You can probably get the tickets for around $5-600 if you buy in advance. And don't forget to get your passport

there's a few certainties in life...
- you will die one day
- some woman will cause you grief
- money will always be an issue

now, if you say you can afford it, just do it and dont look back!

international roaming is very expensive.

if staying for only a month, better off getting a rental cellphone (there should be booths at the airport or any touristy areas).

If you need a phone to call back to the US, cheapest method is to buy calling cards from Holland , usually found in Tobacco stands (the airport ones are usually SUPER expensive. But if you have to, then you have to)

If you want a phone to call within Holland, I suggest purchacing a prepaid cell phone.
you're gonna end up spending ~$70 - 100.
You need to buy the phone first, from any cell phone store really. That usually comes with some minutes. Then, when you run out (and you probably will) you can purchase more minutes.
