My GF and I will be there from 3/13 until 3/19.

Any thoughts? Tips? Must see places?

See Columbus's Dominican Republic grave site.
Beware of driving on the roads, Dominicans are really crazy drivers.

Other things of interest, I saw a Winter Ball game down there, it was very interesting. At the time, they had to shut down power to a large section of the place where the game was being held so they could light up the stadium. They take baseball very seriously down there.

Take that little guy Nelson with you, his fame will protect you. And he doesn't eat very much.

If you stay down there long enough, you might get signed by the Mets.

found out that it's a No

All nationalities require a valid passport (except nationals of Canada and the USA staying up to 90 days only need holding appropriate ID such as a Birth Certificate and a Driver's Licence which proves citizenship and nationals of Germany holding a National Identity Card).

i wasn't following the stream of conciousness threads

"its a no" was the answer to "do i need a passport." i'm sick and the brain isn't working.

why the dominican republic?

Dominican is a dump. I'll never go back. Stay on the resort, don't bother going to Peurto Plata townsite or Souza (sp?) beach.

Coming back to DR on a cruise, you knew you were getting close to the island because the amount of garbage in the water was incredible. What an incredibly dirty country.

The AIDS is supposed to be bad there too, so don't pick up a new "girlfriend"

Sorry pal, it's not a tourist paradise. I am sure some of the resorts are nice though, just don't leave it for your own safety. Seriously.

I've seen very good reviews (or trips take in the last couple of months) so apparently SOME people are having a good time :|

Like I said, I am sure some of the *RESORTS* are fabulous. The towns are not a place you want to be. It is not a 1st world country and the poulation is very, very poor.

I was on a public beach and when I was getting back to my tour bus I walked past the drunk guy stumbling and loading a revolver out in public.

No thanks.

well, i'll be on a resort the whole time (all-inclusive) so I am not too concerned with the "city dwellers"

Yeah, but you've also heard stories of Americans being targeted just because they're Americans. You've heard and read news stories of American tourists getting kidnapped and ransomed or murdered, and it happens WAY too often. By all means, make the decision to go or not for yourself, but you won't find my ass down there unless I'm packing heat everywhere I go and not leaving the resort soil unless absolutely necessary and with several extra mags. I just don't trust anyone south of the Rio Grand in the western hemisphere.
