Lots of good food these days in Hollywood and if you want live music / theater, can't really avoid Hollywood.
Generally won't find locals near Hollywood/Highland though...

don't put this on your itinerary. if you are going to any mall while in Los Angeles, it should be the Grove / Farmer's Market. Do this while you do your midcity museum run (LACMA, Tar Pits, Peterson Auto Museum, etc.)the Ovation mall
Yes, Highland is a cross street of Hollywood Blvd.Good to hear but pretty sure this is a different "Highland" lol.![]()
Agreed there. Granted its been a few years but there's nothing particularly "Hollywood" about that mall other than it's location. TCL Theater and El Cap, no argument there. Amoeba Music if you or the kids are at all into music.
Amoeba Music was founded by former employees of nearby Rasputin Records and opened on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley in 1990. The original founding members were Marc Weinstein, Dave Prinz, and Mike Boyder.[2][3] The iconic Amoeba logo was designed by comic book artist Shepherd Hendrix.
The hotel you're checking into sucks but the area is actually starting to heavily gentrify.
You'll be near a few hotspots by Union Station (new Chinatown, Arts District, Little Tokyo, DTLA) where you'll see 500k-1M lofts with tons of homeless people all around. Safety depends on where you are - these days I feel safer in Arts District than DTLA proper.
The metro system (ie Red/Blue/Purple/Gold lines) are generally...not clean. If you are worried about staying at the Metro Hotel, I'd suggest you just rent a car and not rely on public transportation. Amtrak/Metrolink are cool though.
If Universal Studios is on the table, there are lots of much better hotels in that area.
Agreed on the last bit. Though campus radio is about the only place on the dial with any credibility these days. Luckily my favorite station here in LA happens to be a campus station. Win-win!I applied for work at Rasputin's, Amoeba too, I think (the original), but wasn't hired. I talked directly with the guy who started Rasputin's (Ken Sarachan), a bit of a half wit who started out by selling used records on Telegraph Avenue, next to the UC Berkeley campus. I had been working for many years at the campus radio station, knew a lot about music and records. I was not hired. I guess it just wasn't my karma to make any money off my DJ schtick. That may be for the best. It bolsters my credibility as a DJ.
Which station is that? I grew up there and visit once in a while. Besides that, I can probably hear them over the internet.Agreed on the last bit.
