When I was last in Hollywood there WERE some homeless folks around but nothing like today..... and the place was nasty back then already!

It will be really awesome to be stuck there with no wheels and kids in-tow. o_O

he's alive

Good to hear but pretty sure this is a different "Highland" lol. ;)

I kinda wish those people would commit minor crimes so the cops would have to drag them in.
When the courts realize this is costing them a shitload of money I'd hope the state realizes its actually easier and cheaper to find real solutions for the homeless, as opposed to ignoring problems and pretending they'll go away.

We will just look at the stars on the Walk of Fame, the Ovation mall, snap a pics in front of the TCL Chinese theater and El Captian theather, then take a Lyft to the Hoolywood sign. Afterward head to Santa Monica.

Agreed there. Granted its been a few years but there's nothing particularly "Hollywood" about that mall other than it's location. TCL Theater and El Cap, no argument there. Amoeba Music if you or the kids are at all into music.

Amoeba Music was founded by former employees of nearby Rasputin Records and opened on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley in 1990. The original founding members were Marc Weinstein, Dave Prinz, and Mike Boyder.[2][3] The iconic Amoeba logo was designed by comic book artist Shepherd Hendrix.

I applied for work at Rasputin's, Amoeba too, I think (the original), but wasn't hired. I talked directly with the guy who started Rasputin's (Ken Sarachan), a bit of a half wit who started out by selling used records on Telegraph Avenue, next to the UC Berkeley campus. I had been working for many years at the campus radio station, knew a lot about music and records. I was not hired. I guess it just wasn't my karma to make any money off my DJ schtick. That may be for the best. It bolsters my credibility as a DJ.

The hotel you're checking into sucks but the area is actually starting to heavily gentrify.

You'll be near a few hotspots by Union Station (new Chinatown, Arts District, Little Tokyo, DTLA) where you'll see 500k-1M lofts with tons of homeless people all around. Safety depends on where you are - these days I feel safer in Arts District than DTLA proper.

The metro system (ie Red/Blue/Purple/Gold lines) are generally...not clean. If you are worried about staying at the Metro Hotel, I'd suggest you just rent a car and not rely on public transportation. Amtrak/Metrolink are cool though.

If Universal Studios is on the table, there are lots of much better hotels in that area.

He lives!

Hey, @Ns1 some of us were wondering earlier if you got involved in a corgi vs MAGAT battle the other week.

I take it that is a rhetorical question...

I'll defer to others. I may be part Chinese...and I enjoy dim sum but it's literally been years since I've gone out for it.

Agreed on the last bit. Though campus radio is about the only place on the dial with any credibility these days. Luckily my favorite station here in LA happens to be a campus station. Win-win!

Which station is that? I grew up there and visit once in a while. Besides that, I can probably hear them over the internet.

They recently re-branded as The SoCal Sound. It's AAA format. Admittedly it is not true campus radio with the students on air, etc but is a public station, the university holds the license and the studio is on campus.

Oh, any good chinese dim sum places in LA?

This can be a turkey shoot.
Most of LA is fusion, unless you go out to the ethnic centers.
Example, you will find japanese fusion everywhere.
They even use Izayaka which should be more traditional food / gastro hub style, even they are typically fusion.

This applies for chinese as well.
Only fusion is a bit more spread out.
You have your american fusion - Panda.
You have your Korean fusion - Sort of Cantonese based.
Then you have your authentic chinese food, where you need a translator or you risk ordering something you never ordered scaring your little kids when it comes out.

But if you really want awesome dimsum, you need to head east of LA, a bit, like Monterey park, or Alhambra for really good stuff.

But if you want OK dimsum in chinatown area in downtown LA.

My friends like that place. Its ok, but a bit hard to find, so you may want to uber it so you can walk the rest of the way.
Make sure you call the palace and ask what time they offer dimsum or what days, as some places are not available after 2pm only on weekends.

I haven't touched my radio in ages.
Although i'll listen to AM 670 once in a while to get my news updates.
But mostly, its Spotify all the way.
