Trinitron: does it make a difference, and what has it?

I'm looking for a "19 monitor, and don't want to get a crappy one.
I have heard great things from these forums about Trinitron, but does any who has a Trinitron monitor really
see a difference? Also, it is never listred under a monitor's specs whether it has Trinitron or not. So, I know it's asking
a big favor, but could someone who knows please list as many monitors with Trinitron you can think of?
Thanks for any replies.

Trintrons have alot better TEXT quality then standard monitors and usually look a tad bit sharper, thats bout it. I wont use anything but a trinitron.

(except flat panel)

i have a sony wega with a trinitron monitor (tv) and it is so sweet and it has a flat screen so less glare and yes it does make a difference in the glare factor. have never seen a trinitron comp monitor though but the tv is awesome

After working on an aperture grille monitor (Trinitron, DiamondTron), you will refuse to work on shadow mask monitors.

I'm tired of posters who want quality but aren't prepared to pay. How do you think the economy runs? Some goods are more expensive because the makers don't cut corners. You won't pay $400 for a 19" monitor? Buy something like a CTX VL950 or X90 if you won't pay much. They are not flat, not trinitron, but they are under $300.

I believe he wants to know why.

From what I understand the high-end SMs are best at displaying text while the AG monitors are best at displaying vivid/rich colors. The thing is both can do a top-notch job in either category if you find the right monitor. The AG's only fault seems to be in the two horizontal damper wires that run the length of the screen. These were easy to see on earlier AG monitors but much more difficult to detect on the newer units.

I think most people want quality for as little as possible. What's wrong with wanting to buy a good product while saving a few bucks? He's just shopping around right now to find out what he can get for his money.

yup, have atleast 400 clams avaliable or don't bother at all. Your buying your most important interface with your computer, and one that affects your eyes, one of the most important sense you can have. Good monitors last years so its an ok investment. you need a good monitor with high refreshes so your eyes don't get tired, cheap ones don't do that. trinitron is good, but just having a trinitron tube doesn't mean much if refresh is bad. also get a flat screen, once you go flat you ...you know what🙂

While trinitron is definatly better than shadow mask monitors, that doesnt mean that some monitors based on shadow mask tubes are horrible. There are some good quality monitors with sharp text and good colors, and you'll spend 100 dollars less. A Samsung 955DF is a great monitor, flat screen, and looks good for its price.

i got a kds av-195tf trinitron flat screen monitor a few months ago, looks really good, i'd recommend it...got it for $315

Thanks for the replies. I apologize, I have never been sure if you always got what you
pay for in the computer world. Thanks for enlightening me. So, lets say my range was$300-$400.
What would be soem great models for 3d graphics, namely computer games?

Just a comment on the P991 from Dell.

I had to replace 4 of them at work because of bad image.
They must get 2'nd garde tubes from Sony or something. They s--ck basically.
The good ones has great picture..... but the quality.....

Absolutely.
As you said you want a monitor mainly for gaming, thus i think you'll be better off with a Trinitron (also called Apreture Grille). In fact if you won't go higher than 1280x1024 res. in Windows you don't necessarily have to pay for a high-end 19incher - just look for one that will reach 85Hz at your target Windows resolution.

Bacteria: Hm...what are the advantages of having a "17 instead of a"19, and how can I tell if a monitor is AG or SM?

PlatinumGold: why did you not liek AG?

I disagree. Hitachi makes some excellent Invar shadow mask displays. (It's too bad that they are getting out of the CRT monitor business, though)

I didn't say that you should get a 17". What I meant is that if you'll use it mainly for gaming you'll should get a mid-range 19", 96KHz spec. - 1280x1024@85Hz in Windows. Getting a monitor that will do 1600x1200@85Hz would probably be a waste of money if you won't run it in that resolution.
